Have you ever wanted a moat?
Do you know how a moat is filled with water?
What creatures would you most want to keep in your moat?
She lives in the clouds and talks to the birds...

I've never wanted a moat. It seems like a dumb idea in modern life.

...presumably most moats filled via a nearby spring or river-----------castles usually were situated near a city, and cities are generally located along waterways.

I'd probably just let normal river animals inhabit the moat. It seems counterintuitive to fill it with crocodiles, unless you're willing to sacrifice a whole lot of livestock to their upkeep, or you make it so tempting for people to come break in and steal treasure or assassinate you that they're constantly falling in. In fact, I'd be worried some kid or elderly lady would fall in and get eaten up------------PR nightmare. (Although, if this were a fantasy setting, maybe I could cultivate a diplomatic relationship with merfolk or frogoloids or something. They patrol the waterways, I give them some tax incentives or encourage intermarriage into the nobility. Most European aristocrats already looked like frogs as of about 1700, probably nobody would bat an eye.)
