WvsW's new layout project.

This is gonna just be a concept for Jay to think about. He doesn't have to agree with it if he doesn't want to. I've been inspired to work on a fresher look for NC. Keep in mind this will just be my concept. I've already started on a navigation thing which I will attach now. The background of the website will be green or green with some silhouettes of various neglected characters but with a burn and dodge feel.

This is just a rough draft. Please review and talk about ways to improve the draft. I will upload more and more of this project as I continue working on it. It is rather big. This whole thing is just something I can do to kill time with. I've been bored as of late.

Looks interesting. I like the background. The sprites are a little rough looking, though. Perhaps the sprites could be sexied up a bit.

Also, Tutorials? Perhaps link to Viewer Stuff instead. Like the current sections of NC.-jay

Got it. I'm gonna spend tonight working on some "Sexied up" sprites to use. Keep in mind this project will take a while but the time invested will be worth it.

[EDIT]

Took what you said Jay. It's really hard to "sexy up" sprites. This is the best I could come up with as of right now. I must ask, who created that awesome pic of Dr.Donez? I'm thinking if he can make an awesome version of Fred that I could have it sitting on the right side.

Version 1.01 of the navigation bar. Jay are you familiar with how to have a drop-down menu when you have your mouse click on something? I was thinking that'd be a cool effect to have when you click on these five main things.

NC needs something like this to boot it kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

It's more than just moving things around and adding gradient backgrounds. You need to put an artistic feel into each and every part of the template.

I have just added some concept buttons for added navigation. Use them however you want Jay I guess.

Yes, but all NC needs is some bits moved around and some not-very-but-still-quite flashy graphics.

Your buttons aren't so great, too. The bevel looks weird and the handwritten text looks childish. It's all not very "NC-ish." The current buttons do the trick.

Trust me, when I am done with all of my concepts it will look good altogether. The buttons are a bit big but they can be easily resized without distortion (i have ways). Besides, those are just for side navigation. This is considered a whole revamping of the layout. Your idea looks as though it was made in MS Paint (Sry jay, i know you most likely used ms paint too). I want to take advantage of the higher end software to make a visually pleasing product.

The sprites look blurrier, but not really sexier.

Riptide made the Donez art many many years ago. I still see him around VGF every once in a while.

I'm not familiar with clicky dropdown menu thingies.

I kind of like aspects of both of your layout ideas. Perhaps we can merge the best parts of them.

I like the sidebar.

Can you ask riptide to make a sexy version of fred? Perhaps having him creeping up from one of the corners in a sexified version will look cool.

Oh and about those buttons, you can resize them however you want and they will still maintain the wording. So say you want it as a skinny bar then you could still read it. I tested this in photoshop.

This project is actually harder than I thought. I rather prefer to see NC updated and abandon the use of MS Paint (except of course for sprite comics DUHH!!) for the layout but if you like some things from his thing then I can compromise.

I pruned it down to just Fred. But I like Fred's updated look as shown here.

It's honestly a bit drab. Fred's too dark for the dark background and the font's a bit strange.

And mine wasn't made in Paint. It was made in Adobe ImageReady CS2, kthx.

I need you to go into better detail than just drab or strange. I need constructive thoughts for improving the image. What should I change to make it look better for you Laika?

I think it's a total do-over, though. You need a lighter background, better sprites, and a better font. You also need to completely ditch the handwritten buttons.

...the buttons I made were based off of Meteos. I did make those completely by scratch though and it was hard to find the right effects. Anyway, I'm going to ignore Laika's critique and continue on with my concept. Laika, this is just a vision okay? I want constructive critiques and better reasons like the ones Jay has pointed out. "complete do-over" does not help. Would it help if I had some neglected characters floating around those blocks with updated looks? Such as Citrus Man or Executrain?

I think the Backround needs to be a little lighter, although the way the backround looks is good.

Personally, I would like if you changed the text to something not so Times New Roman-y, maybe a Mario-styled text, or something that fits NC.

I think the sprite is amazing, sure it doesn't fit with the 8-bitness of the comix, but that's ok, especially since the front page is supposed to be the most flashy anyway.

WvsW, did you make those buttons with the help of Plastic Wrap? They look nice, but, I think an actual font would do a better job than the drawn stuff. Just saying <_<

If you think I'm being mean, WVSW, you'd never make it in the graphic design industry.

I'm not saying you are mean. I just want to disagree with your critique. I'm sorry. I feel strongly about my idea that I have in my head right now and when it is complete I think it will turn out good.
