Odin Sphere

#1

Post by Perrin Aybara » Wed Jan 30, 2008 1:46 pm

I picked up this game over the weekend since I've just been itching to play a new RPG. I also heard good things about it on RPGamer.com. Oh, and I figured it would be a good purchase since I am never going to buy another Square game ever again.

So, are there any good/bad comments on the game before I start playing?-jay

I've never played it either. Have fun with it. I want to hear your review so I know if I can have "Jay Resop approved!" written on the box.

What system is it for? -CSM

^PS2.

I bought it when it dropped, and then never actually got around to starting it. That'll happen. (To me, anyway.)

I played it. Beat it. Good, hard 2-D sidescroller with RPG elements and five concurrent storylines with definite Nordic themes (though few specific Nordic elements). It's really, really good. I should write a review it is so good.

It has a lot of impromptu gardening in it. You'll be growing most of your HP restoration items for the first part.

Ehhhhh, it depends. A lot of your best cooking items are found in the wild, though it's true the very best takes growing.

So... an hour into the game, and I'm already bored and annoyed with the battle system. I donno what it was, but it sure didn't grab me at all in that first hour.

Too repetitive. And I'm already annoyed how all of the battle screens are a giant circle (what's the deal with that?).

I'm also not a huge fan of any sort of cooking/food/gardening system in games.

So... I stopped playing it last week and picked back up SuPaper MaRPGio. Which I'm *almost* close to finishing now.

I'll give Odin Sphere another shot soon though, since I'm sure that it *has* to get better than this.

I remember getting annoyed with the inventory; I kept having to discard crap because it got full. =\

Right. It's pretty bad when I get annoyed with it within an hour of playing.

The equip system is also fairly lame. Only one item? Meh.-jay

Wait... only one weapon OR one armor? Or one of each? Either way, that's lame. -CSM

Your weapon levels up; you always have that weapon.

You guys realize you can buy more inventory space, right?

The combat system gets better as you go along: the more powers you get, in general, the better.

And....save all your magic coins when possible.

That kinda reminds me of the Dark Cloud games, where you don't really have any armor and you increase your defense in the story...sounds kinda lame...like, Chrono Cross lame. -CSM

You don't really have any armor at all; enemies tend to do set amounts of damage to you based on enemy type and the level of your health. Health level may not affect it, even, come to think.

It's not lame, it's just breaking away from the d20 system that every JRPG has had its head up the ass of for twenty-two years.

This is without a doubt one of the WORST games I have ever seen.

Also, did it bother anyone else that the creepy lead character girl says to her significant other, "I wish my father loved me the way you love me." Because that hit a weirdness note with me.

Who the hell are you talking about? I don't remember Gwendolyn saying that to Oswin. Ever.

Also: you are all plebeians and need to RTFM.

I'm not sure that she says it TO him, but she does say it about him.

And I think his name was Oswold..

You're right, it's Oswald. I was thinking Oswin from Fire Emblem.
