Square characters you think suck, but don't.
Gau
People are too quick to put Gau off. And with good reason: you can't control him and his attacks are too numerous. But these people just lack the patience they need to learn his strengths. First of all, he gets the game's best armor in the Snow Muffler, and that says something right there. Next off is his versatility in his attacks. With the proper Rages, he can learn Level 2 and even Level 3 spells before anyone else does. And later in the game, he gets lots of status immunity and elemental protection without having to waste a Relic slot.
Relm
Bubbly ditzes are also easy characters to put off. And I don't blame them. Who wants an annoying little girl in your party? I don't. But Relm is actually quite different. Besides all the awesome one liners, she has the BEST Magic stat in all of FFVI. Even better than Terra does. (Terra has 37 and Relm has 44). And with equipment, Relm gets boosted even higher. Her defense isn't bad, either, with her BehemothSuit and the game's best helmet in the Cat Hood. Invest some spells into Relm and you'll see she becomes one of your biggest assets.
Rikku
Similar to Relm, she gets put off for many of the same reasons Relm does. And her stats suck SO much except for her Speed stat. And after all, what use does she have besides Stealing? Mix is easily forgotten as one of the most important FFX abilities. It's the ONLY way you can put up a protective barrier on your ENTIRE party at once (ie those abilities that give you Safe, Shell, Haste, and Regen all at once). I could NOT beat half the monsters in the Monster Arena without Rikku.
Ayla
Yeah. She can't inflict Magic damage at ALL. It's tough being Ayla. And nobody sees that she has a perk besides high physical attack power. Make a party with her and Frog and witness the power of...Slurp Kiss! This is by FAR the best healing ability in the game. At low levels, it'll recover around 500 HP AND heal all status for only 2 MP from Ayla and 1 from Frog! This is the best way to get out of a jam, better than Frog and Robo's Cure Wave or Frog and Marle's Double Cure.

Who the hell picks on Gau?
And it depends on which Rikku you mean. Or was that "Riku"?

Yeah, but Jay hated FF12 too.
Gau rules.
I dunno Rikku. I know the dude from Kingdom Hearts, though. He's lame. Everyone knows the Beast shoulda kicked his ass.

Then I can only imagine liking Rikku.
As for my favorite Rage...not sure. I remember using Stray Cat a lot, but I'll have to play through again to be sure.
Mmm. FF6.
So is FFX worth the investment? Are the characters any good?

Balthier's more of a Setzer/Edgar.
I've yet to see another Kain. Basch is close, though.

This One from FFX Her, Lulu and Auron are the only decent people in the game.
^A LOT of people pick on Gau. Jay, for instance.
Hey now, I don't even remember ever picking on Gau. It must have been years ago if I did. And if I did, it was only in good fun (like any of my rants).
Yeah, I have no beef with Gau.
If you're going to blame me on something, at least pick something fairly recent that I can remember, heh.-jay

WHOA, someone else who acknowledges Relm's potential as well? You're much cooler than I thought, CSM.
Wakka - Final Fantasy X
The Sphere Grid can easily eliminate any need for him outside of blitzball, especially since Rikku, Tidus, Yuna&her Aeons, and Auron can pretty much do most of what the other party members can, but Wakka's overdrive is the second thing that Auron and Tidus can't replace. (The first being underwater)
Quina - Final Fantasy IX
It's really easy to think that s/he is worthless once you get all eight characters, because Quina is pretty much the definition of the Hybrid. S/he can attack, but Steiner, Freya, Amarant, and Zidane are much better. S/he can also cast, but Vivi and Dagger are better, S/he can also heal but Eiko and Dagger are much better. Plus, it's easy to dismiss him/her because all of his/her abilities can be very annoying to get. But when you do get the good ones like Twister, Magic Hammer, White Wind, Mighty Guard, and Frog Drop, then Quina really does begin to catch up to the other party members. The fact that you have to run around and carefully hit the enemies in order to truly get all of Quina's Blue Magic is pretty much the big turnoff. If Blue Mages learned their abilities much easier, then they woudl be used more.
Rafa and Malak - Final Fantasy Tactics.
Believe it or not, I have a file in which Malak is in the final battle. He's good as a Chemist and I use him as a white mage/chemist.
Mustadio - Final Fantasy Tactisc.
Make him a knight that can use guns and he's probably the best equipment-breaker you'll have until you get Meliadoul or Orlandu.
Gunners - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Stopshot or the Mog Knight's Ultima move with a gun make them a deadly force. I used a gunner in the final battle when I owned the Li-grim in a few moves. (The final boss is really pathetic...I blinded her and she tried to ATTACK me when she had all those cheap-ass moves. -_-)

NO, NO, NO. THAT is disgusting. THAT is why I hate Rikku now.
Dude, Wakka is one of the most used characters in the game.
Jay, I remember lots of people picking on Gau back in the old days. Prominent ones. I just forgot who. Maybe I was confusing you with T2K. I KNOW for a fact that it was Bolt who dissed Relm though. -CSM

I forgot...
I didn't know people underrated Rikku...She was actually my most used characters in Final Fantasy X after Auron. Even on Low-level challenges, people use Rikku because of Mix.

Pre-slut era Rikku.
Wakka is cool too. And Yuna, once you break her damage limit, is freaking awesome with her aeons and the ability to cast holy. She annoys me still, but it makes up for it somewhat.
Quina is a very good character to mention. Her white wind is one of the best defensive spells in the game, and dead useful (especially when you battle Lich with only her and Zidane).
EDIT: The picture worked before.
