Help in that Arcade game in Donkey Kong 64.

I just can't seem to pass that classic Donkey Kong game. You find it in Frantic Factory, it is a arcade game which Mario has to rescue the girl. I'm asking, how do you gain a life there? I know there is some way to gain a 1-up. Any other tips would be great too. Thanks.

I sure did. Maybe because this one is harder to obtain lives in.

Just to note, it takes about 10,000 points to obtain a life.
