Gladly (again.) The story is the dominating force that drives the RPG. For example, Mario 64 is NOT story driven. It's action driven, where the collecting of items and such help your progress in the game, but not necessarily the story. As in most platform/adventures, the story is basically handed to you in the beginning. In Mario 64, you learn right off the back that Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser, and only the star power can free her. The plot remains as such for the whole game.
Now, an RPG is story driven. The game opens and unfolds like a novel. As in, you don't know much from the beginning, but the plot is revealed through events in the game. In other words, you know a lot more about the plot of an RPG after than before. And because the plot actually has a significant evolution, it can easily be turned into a story without much change. Zelda, for example. Think abot how OoT starts. Link believes that he is going to help the Deku Tree. And from there, the story takes off in an unexpected direction.
I'm not saying that basic adventures lack story, but it isn't as important as that of an RPG.
Mind you, the story is only one of the many elements necessary to have a true game of the genre. A game could have an RPGish story (SA2:B, Metroid Prime) and not be a full RPG.
Oh, and Pokemon is an RPG instantly because of the battle system. I think I made that point in the article...

Codie, the driving force is what pushes the game on. As I said, the driving force of Super Mario 64 is to collect the starts. In an RPG, it's thestory. The game rides on the story, not on one specific action, such as collecting stars or jiggies, or even saving the world from aliens.
The battle system signifies an RPG. I think it's safe to say that any game with one is an RPG, regardless of the complexity of the story. BUT KNUX, A BATTLE SYSTEM IS NOT NECESSARY FOR AN RPG.
What you consider an RPG is basically true. But the story is one of the deciding aspects. If the story doesn't evolve, it's most likely not an RPG.
Knux, not really. WW is probably one of the most complicated Zeldas plot wise.
I'm thinking about Pokemon. The battles and levels are what really make it an RPG right away. But Pokemon really has no story, which is sort of like a freestyle RPG, such as Everquest.
