FF is fun. FFIV is even better. FFVI may be the greatest game ever. FFVII is overrated. FFVIII isn't the best, but isn't the worst. FFIX is my 2nd favorite. FFX is a movie. FFXI doesn't count. FFX-2 is a joke. FFXII makes me a sad panda. Those are my thoughts.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

I've finished I, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, Tactics, and Mystic Quest. I tried playing III and X, but I just didn't want to finish it
Oh, and I've made FFVII my religion. I figure since I played it a few times, and that I have no innate religious background, I'd make a religion out of this gaming culture touchstone.

Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, and IX are all masterpieces. VI is exactly what Panfan said.
Final Fantasy VII is overrated, of course. Final Fantasy VIII wasn't that great, but it wasn't that bad either. The original Final Fantasy is a (hard to beat) classic. Final Fantasy X was meh.
The rest I've never played. :(

The original Final Fantasy is too archaic to be considered a legitiately fun experience anymore.
FF2 blows.
Haven't played FF3 enough to pass judgment.
FF4 is made of awesome.
FF5 is pretty cool, but the job system feels somewhat messy and the narrative is a bit weird. Not weird, but ... it lacks a certain something. I don't know how to phrase it.
FF6 is of course one of the best games ever made.
FF7 is good, but I haven't been able to force myself to finish it because I don't care about any of the characters besides Barret. That and this game has turned Nomura into a whore with a head the size of the Hindenburg.
FF8 was a pretty cool game. Several of the characters were annoying (Squall can be such a wuss), but I did enjoy most of the mechanics more than those in previous games. Just that the last disc of the game really fell apart in terms of story.
FF9 was pretty freaking awesome. It's fiercely battling FF6 for the place as the top of the heap.
Didn't play FF10 and FF10-2, though I plan to.
FF12 is exquisite, a departure from the series in the sense that there's no bunch of crap where everybody talks about the living planet and flowers and stars and the power of friendship and how all living things dream of getting along. The narrative feels more fully fleshed out, the characterization is subtle, the boss battles are actually difficult without being cheap...it's great. Ogre Battle great.
I'll give a ranking of what I've played when I finish 12.

I've only played a few of them.In fact I can name the ones that i have played.
Final Fantasy legends II
FFV
FFIX
FFX
FF Tactics advance
FFCC,
and I haven't beaten a single one.
My favorite would have to be FFX because I've played the farthest in it.
followed by a tie between FFCC and FFIX.

Yeah, what was the deal with Time Compression? I read someone who said "why oh why did they not end the game when they get back from space?"

My ranking of FF games generally varies from day to day, as I haven't played most of these in years. So it's hard to remember exactly how I liked each with relation to each other. But here's how they fall right now off the top of my head, from best to worst:
1. VI (Duh)
2. VIII (I need to play it again sometime, and I don't know why I remember liking it, but I don't remember having too many issues with this one. Plus, there's the whole neglected factor that probably appeals to me.)
Now it gets hard. Hm... yeah. Most of these could probably be interchangable.
3. VII (Sure, it's overrated. But it's still a good game.)
4. X (Yeah, I know most people don't like it, and the characters are lame, but it at least had an interesting story. And the battle system was quick and fun. At least from what I remember.)
5. IX (Fun game, but I don't see what all of the fuss is about. I remember not getting into the story at all. Maybe it's just because I had to restart my game after I lost my data when I was on disc 3, which really pissed me off, and I didn't play it again for years.)
6. IV (Good game for it's time, but it's limitations have just become more noticable with time. Mainly, it's simplicity.)
And for the bottom of the pile...
7. T (As in Tactics. Fun game, but I don't see what all of the obsession is about. I guess I'm just not into tactical RPGs.)
8. X-2 (It gets extra points simply for being a game about sluts, which is funny.)
9. V (Didn't speak to me at all.)
10. I (I only played it for a little while, but it seemed boring.)
11. XII (See my endless rants on why I hated 12 elsewhere.)

But now it's a Playstation thing... It can go both ways... Either way... I really enjoy VI as well... It was super, but I still like IX more... I own all of the numbered games with the exception of III and XI... But I have not played all of them... I suppose it is because I read too much... Either way I should probably start playing those soon. =P

FFIX and FFVII are the only ones I've played for any amount of time. I remember liking FFIX more, but only marginally; neither one really hooked me. Japanese-style RPGs aren't really my thing; I prefer American-style RPGs, what with the non-linearity and emphasis on gameplay rather than story.
Get this out of the Playstation forum. This was originally a Nintendo thing.
And see my many posts elsewhere for which ones I like and which ones I don't. -CSM
So, I've got Elder Scolls as "Game of the". If you want to be really happy, then this topic should be in the RPG board, but anyway.....
FFVIII. Yes the story falls apart at the end, but hell, at least it got me too the end of a FF game (which many of them haven't) How can anyone not want a gunblade? Or the Summons? The only thing that I wasn't so keen on was the Overdrive/Trace/Limit system. Other than that I liked that game most of all.
FFX. If Tidus' personnality was a better, then this game would be oodles better, and probably would be my favourite game. Also More summons would be nice.
FFIX. Every time I play this something, happens that stops me from carrying on the game. It's not that I don't like the game, I love it. But a new game, or console arrives and takes my attention over.
Need to go, do this latter.
