Maybe Sonic dyed his fur blue and tried to look punk rock or something. I don't know.

You see, the allele for blue fur is recessive and the allel for brown fur is dominant(meaning that a hedgehog is more likely to have brown fur. His parents: Dad was brown, Mom was blue. Dad had one dominant brown fur allele and one recessive blue fur allele. Mom had two recessive blue fur alleles. Sonic got one blue fur allele from his dad and one from his mom, therefore, he is blue.

Nah, Sonic is naturally blue. He, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and Cream all have a birth disorder.

Or it's just the fact that he's a fictional character and Sega could do whatever the hell they wanted with him.

According to the minicomic originally put out by Sega themselves, Sonic was originally brown, but at one point he smashed the sound barrier (while running on a treadmill?!?), and was then 'bombarded by shockwaves' in what was labeled 'the cobalt effect', resulting in him turning blue (and trashing his white sneakers, which were supposedly then replaced with his current, 'frictionless', shoes.). This was while being tested by 'Dr. Kintobor', who later turned into Dr. Robotnik by an accident involving a bottle of soda, a hardboiled egg, a Toejam and Earl comic, and the Chaos Containment System (which is supposedly the source of all those rings, and the first place the Chaos Emeralds were put to use- as storage for the chaos in the universe).

Which just goes to show that Sega really hopes nobody like me ever gets heard, because we remember the nonsensical and really rather dumb way they explained the beginning of the first game.
Ace Mercury has the best explanation(and most realistic) so far. None the less, Blue is the usual opposition of Red, so the color does match rival-wise, but as for the fact, there is no real explanation.
Yeah right. You know the japanese just give people blue and pink and green and otherwise unnatural colored hair for no particular reason.

It's the original promo comic released by Sega before the game was released. I was only about 3 or 4 when that was drawn.

So yes. Yes I did. <_<
