I whipped this up for the tip/tricks topic. Since that's no longer stickied I'm dropping it here
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

1) Stick to a genre -- Don't give your character both magic and technology, for instance. If you have too much to work with, your character could very easily become cheap; it also isn't any fun for you or your opponent if you have an easy answer for any situation (Like in the old Batman TV show where he had the Bat-shark repellent, the Bat-alphabet soup container, et cetera). After your character has settled down and balanced out, a plotted battle can give him more stuff later (such as Fenix did)

2) Give your character a distinctive weapon. Give it a special power if you want to, but just adding some texture to the description can help. (Calling it a pearly-handled black dagger is much more vivid than just "his dagger", even if there's no difference in battle. You shouldn't constantly reference it, but it's a nice detail when you do) This weapon will influence the style of your character even if it is mundane, and even more so if it has special properties

3) Do not just carbon copy a video game character. It is very hard to make a battle against yet another Mario clone interesting. You may use the character as a base (in terms of attack and defense abilities), but please don't just frash it together with another character from a different genre, especially if they have opposite personalities. Again, this can be done well (just look at SML, Fenix {formerly Geno}, and LTS), but a simple name change and physical makeover of a video game character will make it much more memorable. Never do this: “He looks just like Luigi except blue”.

4) It is absolutely fine to take a secondary weapon or two from different sources in the same genre, for instance, Ghona's shoulder lasers are duplicated from another character. Copying the primary weapon is a bad idea; the same general type is fine, but if you copy Cloud's sword exactly, for instance, you won't be able to build a distinct character around it.

I have too many qualms with several rules to add them to the "official" guidelines (Wyborn's Ganondorf-styled armor comes to mind) but it's still a good list of suggestions for people trying to get out on their own.
Help me out with the best fanfiction ever, Ganondorf Beats Up EVERYONE! You decide who gets beaten!

For the battle-minded and mathematically inclined, there's the Hyrulian War, a revived time-honored tradition!

Some of the rules are in place to cut down of newbage.

The frashing rule was in for one reason: I don't want to see another Ganondalf. *Shudder* No reason for characters to come into contact, no reason for them to combine, no reason for them to have a single personality completely unlike any of the component characters...

I may be prejudiced, and probably am, but I just don't like characters like that. In fact, I dislike them

I disagree. Just because you don't like seeing character reahses like that doesn't mean it should even be advised to do the contrary - this is a free forum. If someone wants to be Link, Blue Link, Green Link, Space Link, then he can damn well have the freedom to do so. It's not the colour of your cajones but how well you swing them around in battle, friend. Hell, my frist character was basically Mario with ultra-super-techno gloves. And know what? I still consider him an awesome character. IF we ever have some kind of Retro-theme FFA, I'd love to use him again Besides, chances are these "rip-off" characters will eventually develop into something more original anyway, so either way, it works.

I say give her. But when it counts, back up the guff with some tuff. Link or not, it won't be pretty when I throw you around like a sack of wet laundry (ah-ha).

Heh, I remember back when original carecters where rare. Yet there was plenty of good times had by all.

Sorry, I must be too uptight about this. But taking two random canon characters and... but I digress. I can see where you're headed from. I guess it's just the same thing as my anti-recolour gut instinct. And, again, it can be done well, but it's less likely. 90% is crap, but 90% of everything is crap. I'll live with it.

[Parting Shot] And if the rip-offs are going to evolve anyway, why not give them a gentle nudge in the right direction? [/Parting Shot]

You know what? I agree, completly. This was one of my favorite places back when. We need a big battle and preferably by 2 experienced veterans. That'd get some attention. Maybe someone should hook 2 fighters up...

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with being a variation of a character, if not even the character him/herself. I was "Digimon Hunter" and Mewtwo. I did okay for a newbie IMO.

1. You can use any kind of character you want. I mean that, too - most people make up their own characters, but you can use a character from an anime, a cartoon, a videogame, a book...whatever you want. We're equal opportunity people here. The only stipulation is this: You can't use other people's original characters. Ever. Ever. I know, that should go without saying, but I have to say it.
BUT what if we give them PERMISSION????

(Sorry to revive this, but I think that the previous deserves an answer. Forgive me if I'm out of line.)

It isn't that permission is necessarily a problem, I think. The primary concern is your own skills, your own understanding of your character, and in general terms, your own ability to not suck. Would you rather play an uber-character devised and play-tested by another person, or would you rather create one of your own, SOLELY ON YOUR OWN LAURELS?

Please, remember that it isn't who your character is; it's who you make him/her out to be. Creation is only part of the process, indeed, and is relatively minor (in my opinion) when compared to the actual roleplaying of a character, BUT -- take the whole picture into perspective. Take a step back, look at your thoughts from another viewpoint, and reason with yourself.

If you couldn't tell, I'm against such things as "character shops" and "swapping," on principle alone, basically. But, ehh. Whatever; I don't go here enough to dictate any rulings.

Special Attack: Ultima Bomb (can be used by all forms)
History: Samuel was an experiment done by the X parasites during the Fusion mission. The cloning machine that they used still had Metroid DNA and it caused him to have a blue tint to his skin. Another sideaffect of his creation was that he can catch energy and turn it into a bomb. If he collects energy from all four types of beams, the Ultima bomb is formed. He was lost in space after being jettisoned from the BSL Research Station. Some time later, he was found floting near earth's moon and was brought to VGF.
Secret Power: Soul Swap: Can change between three souls. These inclued Alucard, Samuel Aran, Wolfgang Theodore Faymos, and Golden Mistic Avenger.

History: Wolfgang was one of the werewolves in Castlevania. He managed to escape the grip of the castle in 1999 before it was sealed within the eclipse. Ever since, he was following Alucard and doing his bidding. Rumor has it that this is how he ended up in VGF.
Secret Power: Soul Swap: Can change between three souls. These inclued Alucard, Samuel Aran, Wolfgang Theodore Faymos, and Golden Mistic Avenger.

Amadeus E. Faymos
Age: mid 20's

Abilities: Transformation - he can become a Lycan.
Story: After his birth, in which he was born completely human (even though both of his parents were werewolves), his father was hunted down and killed. Feeling sorry for him, the hunter sold the hide to a tailor who turned it into a hooded sweater. This sweater was given to him on his eighteenth birthday and was with him ever since. Shortly after his twentith birthday, he stumbled into Drake's trianing grounds and made quick friends. After recent event's Amadeus can no longer resume his human form and is now stuck in a Furian form when he is not in his Lycan form.

Golden Mistic Avenger

Abilities: Innumerous. Granted by the innumerous pins on his torso's armor.
History: Was once a member of the Mistic Avenger Clan until his Promotion over Bronze and Silver took place on his tenth birthday. After joining the insanity that is VGF, he was prosperous in the several locations he took part in, that is, until he ran into Alucard. Alucard, along with Samuel and Wolfgang, defeated him in battle and took his place at the forums. After several months, GMA was able to return from the Spirit Realm and join Alucard on Earth.
Secret Power: Soul Swap: Can change between three souls. These inclued Alucard, Samuel Aran, Wolfgang Theodore Faymos, and Golden Mistic Avenger.

Drake C. Emry
Age: Mid 20's, one year older than Amadeus
Appearance: Armor designed similar to the ones his father, GMA, wears, with two slight differences: No pins and it is made of Golementium (pure gold mixed with anamentium)Alloy. He can also appear as a golden Dragon.
Weapons: Twin Blades of electricity that come out of his wrists. These are standard among the Mistic Avenger agents.
Abilities: Transformation - At any given time, he can transform to a Golden Dragon. This grants him the ability of flight and flaming breath. Also, he can still use the electric blades in this form.
Story: After being born within the Mistic Avenger Corps., where their agents are trained, Drake was bestowed with an great gift: the power of a Dragon. GMA was alread on duty elsewhere at this time and knew little of his son's ability. Drake receved training at the corps and soon became a skilled dragon warrior. One day, during his training, Drake encountered a man, barely a year younger than himself, who was seemingly lost. This chance encounter started a friendship that lasts to the present and beyond. Upon finishing his training, Drake and Amadeus went off in search of their two fathers, who, as rumor had it, were working in a hotel for the son of Dracula...

Abilites: Transformation. He can change into his Lycan form at will, and if he wears certian armor, can transform to other forms (Dragon Hide Armor gives him a dragon form, etc.) Recently Lycos aquired some new abilities. In the larger size, he can have fire eminate from his hands and allowing him to do massive damage.
Allies: Deké, A spirit that can be both separated and connected to Lycos at any given time. Deké happens to be able to transform as well, but only into his own Lycan form.
Story: Robert was a member of the Royal House of Lycans in Hatsurah, until his whole kingdom, except him, was slaughtered. He survived by wearing his father's Dragon Hide Armor and trasnforming into a dragon. Since the warriors that destroyed his kingdom were only after Lycans, he managed to slip out of the kingdom. He started his training with the sword that he found in the ruins of his kingdom. By his twentith birthday, he realized that he was the only Lycan in Hatsurah, and had the swordman skills to take his revenge on thoes that killed his kind. His searches took him out of Hatsurah, and eventually led him to the Virtual Hotel, where he met Alucard and learned serveral styles of magic and combat.

Ultima Bomb Ablilities:

United History: After Alucard and Wolfgang found Samuel, They proceded by Annihilating the member Golden Mistic Avenger. They then took his member number and place in VGF. For current occupation of the team, see the recent updates to the Virtual Hotel. Current technology aquired by Samuel from the Luminoth will soon allow Alucard, Samuel, and Wolfgang to get their bodies back.

I'll try to remember that. And i do have one question. If i do die. Can i some how survive, and come back into a story later? like an Ominous thing or something. Or can i reincarnate? Or do i need to be revived. It says don't worry about dying. But the RP i came from. Winning is everything. Thanks.

Well in essence your character can die at the end of a fight but every new battle you have with a different opponent means that your character starts fresh and that what ever fate your character suffered in previous battles only pertains to those fights.

What's missing is people who actually finish battles, which is what keeps me from wreaking havoc on some people with my experience.

I think it's probably best to keep the original rules list. If we start tacking on things based more on individual preference than anything else, not only will it get clunky, but the rules will be somewhat scaring people off, which is really not needed.

A note: I realize that we have recently been breaking one of the rules of this forum, and that is telling a person that his low ammount of description is a bad thing. sometimes people just can't stand fighting bad writers, but if you are fighting a vet who posts a novel everytime, and you simply post one paragraph, it's just fine. I was the first to make that mistake, but still...

However, I'm certain that it is okay to set a "No short posts" rule in your personal challenges, just don't go and join a challenge with a wet behind the ears battler and expect him to conform to your style. I've been fretting a bit about that recently, just felt the desire to get it off my chest. Now you can all carry on neglecting to view this thread, you sorry n00bs.

I suppose though I have been in forum role-play and battle before, I am still a newbie here. These rules seem fair enough, but it takes soooo long to accomplish anything, especially when posts may come days apart, killing off an inactive player seems to be a simple way to fix this.
I am happy to report, however that this board seems quite respectable and idiot free.

Have I perhaps found a new home?
