Saw Deadpool & Wolverine last night. Loved it. :)

Marvel Studios had their big SDCC presentation tonight! Let's see the news:
  • Captain America: Brave New World - Giancarlo Esposito's character revealed to be Sidewinder, leader of the Serpent Society. Some other previously presumed plot/character info confirmed.
  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps (a) is the new title of that movie, & (b) begins filming this Tuesday.
  • Avengers 5 is now titled Avengers: Doomsday. It will be directed by the Russo brothers (late of Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, & Endgame) & will star Doctor Doom.........who will be played by Robert Downey Jr.
  • The Russos will also direct Avengers: Secret Wars.
  • Much of the casts from Brave New World, First Steps, & Thunderbolts will be in Doomsday & Secret Wars too.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Brave New World, that's an interesting choice of subtitle. And is it normal for actors in the MCU to take up the role of other characters like Downey playing Doom? I don't think I've seen that happen before.

The subtitle was changed a while back; the old one was worse.

I wouldn't call it "normal", but it has happened a few times. Before now, the most prominent examples were Mahershala Ali (first Cottonmouth, now Blade), Gemma Chan (first Minn-Erva, now Sersi), & Alfre Woodard (first Miriam Sharpe, then Black Mariah).

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

This weekend was the D23 Expo, & here's what Marvel Studios had for us:
  • Early teasers for Born Again, Ironheart, & First Steps, the bootlegs of which have all been taken offline since I saw them last night.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Agatha All Along has its 2-episode premiere in just over 2 weeks, on September 18th!
In the meantime, I've been rewatching a bunch of older films to prep the liveblog for a new film, so here, in timeline order, is a rapid-fire recap of Part "X" (not Roman 10, the letter X)....

Fox X-Men Film Series:

X-Men: First Class
--Timeline cues: Lots of onscreen dates, plus the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's 1962.
--Capsule review: In all honesty, not as good as I remembered, but still good. Bacon is having a *blast*. McAvoy, Fassbender, & Laurence are great. The soapy stuff, Zoe Kravitz, & Riptide add nothing to the proceedings.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
--Timeline cues: Some onscreen dates, plus the Three Mile Island incident. The main action is in 1979.
--Capsule review: There are only 3 reasons to watch this movie, & their names are Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, & Ryan Reynolds. Some of the action is mildly interesting, but otherwise the film is in turns ugly, boring, & insulting.

X-Men (2000)
--Timeline cues: None, it's just sorta ambiguously the present of when it was released.
--Capsule review: In all honesty, better than I remembered. It's not a very good *adaptation*, but it very much is a good *movie*. (Kevin Feige sneaking the cast comic books so they could properly research their roles certainly helped, I'm sure.)

X2
--Timeline cues: See previous film, 2003.
--Capsule review: This one, on the other hand, is a GREAT movie. The acting, writing, action, all fantastic.

X-Men: The Last Stand
--Timeline cues: "The not too distant future" from release, so in or shortly after 2006.
--Capsule review: In a word, inconsistent. There's actually a lot of really good parts, but also a lot of really insulting parts. Halle Berry looks angry to still be here, but the rest of the cast is on point.

The Wolverine
--Timeline cues: Ambiguously the present of 2013 again.
--Capsule review: A very different kind of story, I mostly like it. Viper is bad, & I don't know why Logan had to hook up with Mariko, but everything else is solid at worst.

X-Men: Days of Future Past
--NOTE: If you can score a DVD of the Rogue Cut, do so. It makes an already great film even better, & doesn't change anything about the overall continuity.
--Timeline cues: The future pieces are set in 2023, per being 50 years after the past pieces, which are set in 1973, per the US withdrawal from Vietnam (& per comments in Apocalypse). This also resets the timeline back to before Origins.
--Capsule review: Another peak. This was a hard thing to make make sense, but the scripting is so tight, the action so fluid, & the acting so good.

X-Men: Apocalypse
--Timeline cues: 1983, explicitly stated.
--Capsule review: Much like Last Stand, there's some great parts & some stupid parts, but this time the good outweighs the bad, IMO.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix
--Timeline cues: The first flight of space shuttle Endeavour in 1992.
--Capsule review: The whole opening section is actually quite good. Then it falls off a cliff into either awfulness (everything involving the aliens or Sophie Turner's dialogue delivery in an American accent) or alright-but-depressingly-dreariness (everything else).

Deadpool
--Timeline cues: None, just another ambiguously-the-present (which in this case is 2016).
--Capsule review: After the abomination of Origins Wade, Ryan Reynolds finally got his comic-accurate Deadpool movie, & it's an absolute banger. I do love me a witty irreverent romp.

Deadpool 2
--WARNING: The very beginning of this movie spoils the end of Logan, despite those events not having happened yet in-universe.
--Timeline cues: None again, just roughly 2018 (this will be confirmed in Wade's next movie). However, the credit scene may've created a *3rd* FoX-Men timeline....
--Capsule review: More of the same would not have held up at all, but having D-Piddy go bigger was still a risk, fortunately one that paid off. There is a touch of repetition here, but also deeper thematic work, new character interactions, & better action pieces than the first.

The New Mutants
--Timeline cues: The research footage on Reyes's computer means this can't be too long prior to Logan, so we'll estimate mid 2020s.
--Capsule review: It's easy to make fun of this movie given the circumstances surrounding its release, but it's actually kind of a delight. Hunt, Williams, & Taylor-Joy give really intriguing performances, & it's refreshing to have such a different perspective on this universe.

Logan
--Timeline cues: 2029, per Word of God.
--Capsule review: Absolutely magnificent. Masterclass storytelling & acting. Brutal & sincere. Somewhat of a heartbreaking end to the saga, but at least there's hope for mutantkind even if the X-Men are gone.

Executive summary: Very high highs, very low lows, very middle middles.
Loved: X2, Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Logan, Deadpool 2
Liked: X-Men, First Class, The Wolverine, New Mutants
Varied: Apocalypse, Last Stand
Hated: Origins, Dark Phoenix

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Agatha All Along got off to a very cool start this week with its first 2 episodes. The next 5 weeks will all be single episodes, & then the last 2 eps will drop the night before Halloween!
(Also, "The Ballad of the Witches' Road" is now available for purchase.)

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit digital purchase in early October, so the streaming & disc releases will likely be in late October.

As for the rest of the year, we're still expecting two animated shows: The MCU-canon Eyes of Wakanda & the non-canon Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Updates to the release schedule for the next couple years:
--What If? season 3 begins December 22nd, & it will be the last MCU project out this year.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man begins January 29th, but again, it is not set in the MCU main timeline.
--Daredevil: Born Again season 1 begins March 4th.
--Ironheart begins June 24th.
--Eyes of Wakanda begins August 6th.
--Marvel Zombies is expected next October.
--Wonder Man is expected in December 2025.
--Untitled Spidey 4 is expected July 24th, 2026.
--Blade has been delayed indefinitely.

Back to the blog, as we have finally reached part 69....

Agatha All Along:

#1 "Seekest Thou the Road":
--Diggin' the new Marvel TV logo.
--She's getting too old for this ish.
--Herb!
--Really most sincerely dead.
--"in a crick"? That's the accent you're going with?
--This opening sequence is brilliant. I nearly choked on my food at "Wandavisdysen".
--Anya!
--Confirmation that there *are* multiple copies of the Darkhold in the same universe...but Wanda destroyed ALL of them.
--Phil!
--Julie Powers is in this show.
--Oh, no, Aubrey, you can have every last bit of control you want.
--I heard that Devil's Interval.
--Norm!
--Careful, Aggie, a workout like that after pizza & beer can be a real...Heartstopper.
--I wanna say "Kitty!", but I already hit the punchline of the Cheers setup that nobody's gonna get, so now I'm conflicted.
--Oh hai Austin Powers cinematography.
--Timeline cue: About 3 years since WandaVision. It's fall of 2026.
--Just back it up.
--"You can't kill me! It's not allowed!" Of course not, it's only the first episode!
--Credits: I haven't heard this song in ages, & I haven't heard this version in even longer.

#2 "Circle Sewn with Fate, Unlock Thy Hidden Gate":
--Are you seriously doing a recap on a 2-episode premiere?
--I love that she just refuses to untie him.
--Ah, so his name is ~v\/^~.
--Hey, it's Patti LuPone!
--TFW you accidentally pledge yourself to the person you were trying to blow off.
--Principal Invincible is in this show.
--Are these creepy animals the Salem 7?
--Hot Topic is NOT punk rock.
--This is like all those times I joked about people going deaf by leaving out words while I talked to them.
--"So who's going high" + the rotating closeups in a basement + Debra Jo Rupp = my brain flashing back to That 70s Show.
--This song is lovely. Sharon is so gonna die.
--The boy's a quick thinker.
--Perfect editing to sync the couch with "A door appears".
--Pitchy? How dare you!
--Cooking times vary by (c)oven.
--Credits: I just realized one of the producers has the same name as "Herb's" real identity.

#3 "Through Many Miles of Tricks & Trials":
--Caption Guy, that is NOT her name.
--C'mon, Tom, we gotta go see the wizard; I'll get my brain, he'll get his heart, he'll get his courage, & you'll get to go home.
--The 2nd terror of the Witches' Road is the Lightning Mud, but you were clever enough to discover what that looks like, so in the future we can avoid that too!
--Talbots is a real store; this is not a reference to Glenn.
--Agatha's face when she knows she's in a trap before anyone else does, but can't get out anyway.
--Wine, women, & song!
--This feels like an obvious bait & switch. He looks EXACTLY like ~v\/^~.
--You *can* show underage drinking without driving the rating too high up (just watch Cloak & Dagger).
--What in the Madonna!?
--RIP the upholstery.
--My guy, if you knew what she was hallucinating, you wouldn't think it was so chill.
--Adria Lafayette, an "inconvenient woman"? How dare you!
--If the scariest thing to happen to Alice was that her mom screamed at her, that's not so bad.
--This is why lifeguards make you wait so long to go down waterslides.
--Not to undercut the moment, but I did call it.

#4 "If I Can't Reach You, Let My Song Teach You":
--Oof, did they burn down the gambling house?
--Loving the repeated cloak twirl.
--She didn't have a hair in the sink, so I don't think it mattered how many doses she took.
--Good news, [Teen], Rio definitely won't murder you all before the end of the Road, because she wants Agatha powered up again for a fair fight.
--It's an older effect, but it checks out. :)
--Like, the portraits of torture totally don't fit the vibe, man.
--Way to "yes and", Agatha!
--Ah, backmasking joke.
--Snape. Snape. Severus Snape. DUMBLEDORE!
--Cartman, you can't just assume the one black person plays bass.
--Shake them thangs, Patti!
--This seems unusually early in the episode to have beaten the trial...oh, yeah, huge glass shard. Well, at least you cleared the song, Marty.
--What kind of psychic time bomb is Lilia exactly?
--Yeah, like I said, bait & switch.

#5 "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power":
--Oh, Seven! (That one's for my buddy Chaz.)
--How did they get in here?
--Oh, ok, a direct & reasonable explanation of how they got in here.
--Just Amblin down the road....
--Serious comment: Ouija boards as we know them (& as depicted here) are a toy invented in the 1880s.
--Silly comment: Weegee board.
--Not a great impression of Debra Jo Rupp, but a FANTASTIC impression of how Agatha would've perceived Sharon.
--Gonna be a real short show if they have to write off the title character this early, unless [Teen] spends the rest of the series investigating it or something.
--Alice, how do you even know how to do that? But also, WHY would you do that? RIP.
--Yes, we get it, her son is still dead.
--"Death comes for us all" ...Oroku Saki, but something much worse comes for you, for when you die, it will be without honor.
--Ope, Agatha finally cracked the case that the rest of us cracked the instant Joe Locke was cast as a character who looks exactly like Joe Locke.
--Wait, if you're controlling them, why are they coming after you? And how are you going to get out of here without Lilia to do her trial? And where did Rio scarper off to?

#6 "Familiar by Thy Side":
--Flashback: 3 years ago, William "Billy" Kaplan was the most magical bar mitzvah boy.
--Is this the same venue as Aamir Khan's wedding?
--Who hires a fortune teller at a religious celebra--OH SNAP.
--I don't know enough about tarot to interpret Lilia's outbursts, but they've been thoroughly documented elsewhere. I recognize that symbol she doesn't know she's writing, though.
--Which kid? Probably the only one not wearing his suit jacket.
--Good job NOT doing every car crash commercial!
--Oh, that child is not alive--OH SNAP AGAIN.
--Caption guy, you don't need to say "Teen" anymore.
--Flashback: Just a couple days ago.
--Did he say "Eddie" or "Teddy"?
--Final OH SNAP.
--The public doesn't know what Wanda did.
--Wow, Ralph really *is* an actor; that wasn't just Wanda's doing. (Considering how much time we've been spending in New Jersey lately, "Randall" has to be a Clerks reference.)
--You went MORE specific on a search that already gave 0 results?
--A BLACK HEART!?
--The other side of this conversation is delightful.
--And we're caught up.
--Just like how Westley got out of it.
--Important to remember Agatha really did like the kids.
--"Her own flesh & wires" I cackled.
--Again, you're gonna need Lilia. You haven't done her trial yet.

#7 "Death's Hand in Mine":
--Recap: Called it.
--She has been falling for THIRTY-SEVEN MINUTES!
--Agatha's being honest; she "saw" a body, but it was in her fugue state.
--What in the corporate synergy.
--Betcha wish you still had the psychic with you.
--Hot Damocles!
--You don't actually choose cards in tarot; you draw blindly from a deck. Unless you have the Millennium Puzzle, you don't actually control the order of appearance.
--Like I said, called it.
--Reminiscent of Robin Hinton.
--The full name joke is great.
--This reveal was not as obvious as Billy, but I still had a hunch.
--Death comes for us all, Lilia Calderu, but something much better comes for you, for when you die it will be with great honor.
--Credits: How fitting of a song choice when Evan Peters was in this show.

#8 "Follow Me My Friend, To Glory at the End":
--Alice has a point; except for Billy, she was the youngest one here by a drastic margin.
--"Not yet", eh? Hmm....
--Billy didn't consciously steal anything; he just got thrown around.
--I need you to understand, if you give me ANY excuse to reference the Monkees, I WILL do it.
--Speaking of Head: "And though you see the end in sight, the beginning may arrive."
--I think the premise of the room is that a proper green witch could work without soil or water.
--Wow, it really is that easy to get unbound, eh?
--Wow, it really is that easy to get out of here, eh?
--Death is a fact of life. It's not malevolent (unless you do something to piss it off); it just *is*. The things that CAUSE death, those are sometimes malevolent, but not the fact of death itself.
--These poor people have been through enough already. At least they aren't being hurt this time (well, except for Sharon).
--This was a bad idea, Wiccan.
--Wait, how is there another episode after this?
--I don't get what's even being revealed here.

#9 "Maiden Mother Crone":
--Flashback: 1750. Lemons & murder.
--Time skip: 1756. "Oh, you walk this road alone do you?" The only one that he has ever known.
--So what we're really learning here is that Agatha should've been getting songwriting royalties from Lorna. (Also, I think I get the previous episode's reveal now: There really wasn't a Witches Road until Billy manifested it.)
--Montage: Wait, is she taking out the idiots from Hocus Pocus 2? Maybe Agatha's not so bad after all.
--She's actually right, dude. You only killed Sharon.
--Same logic Daredevil uses for Hand ninjas.
--A pairing on par with Monkey & Bryce.

Executive summary: I didn't know what to expect, but I loved what I got. If Feige is still looking for lieutenants to run the different branches of the expanding MCU, Jac Schaffer is the obvious choice to coordinate the supernatural stuff. Also, accidental nice!

It's hard to describe the placement of this one, especially in the "character" of this liveblog project. To do so, I'll have to borrow a bit of Wade Winston Wilson's ability to look through the 4th wall & reference things that have already been released even though they haven't chronologically occurred yet. On the one hand, this is the followup to Part X that I did recently. On the other hand, this *does* have a basis in the "Sacred Timeline" to work off of. With that in mind, this entry has 2 separate numbers; it's both part 61.6 & part XX....

Deadpool & Wolverine:

--Timeline cue(?): Logan's corpse, so it's 2029 or later? Glad they didn't resurrect him.
--Oh, the TVA? So this might not be the native time for this movie.
--RIP, day player.
--The fighting looks fantastic, but the dance asides look terrible.
--Flashback: March 14th, 2018. The post-credit from DP2 just happened (likely creating a new timeline, for the record). Thanos attacks in about 6 or so weeks. The Avengers aren't really operating right now.
--Favreau was the right choice for this meta narrative.
--Timeline cue for real: Six years later. It's early 2024.
--Why is Shatterstar here?
--Yukio got a line besides "Hi, Wade"!
--Is it Dermot or Dylan?
--Paradox talks about specializing in the Sacred Timeline; he's a traditionalist. Uh-oh.
--Mock the Rock, nice.
--That's a lot of groping.
--Anchor beings are a silly concept; how does a universe exist before its anchor being is born?
--From Wade's perspective, Logan isn't actually dead yet; he's just *gonna* die in 5 years and (understandably) nobody wants to avert the positive consequences of his sacrifice.
--A couple THOUSAND years? You impatient jerk!
--Ok, so Hugh Jackman actually IS in this movie.
--If Wade wasn't explicitly saying it, I wouldn't have recognized Cavill here.
--"Audiences are accustomed to long run times" This IS the longest Deadpool movie.
--If we don't eventually see Thor hold Deadpool, I will be disappoint.
--Yep, there's the confirmation; Paradox ain't supposed to be doing this.
--Welcome to the Void, which as we already know is at the end of time.
--RIP, 20th Century Fox.
--Outstanding bait & switch with the Cap footage earlier. Foolish plan to blast fire at the one guy who can stop fire, though.
--Whoa, Tyler Mane got lines *at all*!
--As we already know, Alioth is no longer being controlled since He Who Remains died.
--Vinnie Jones isn't in this movie.
--I'm surprised she aged in the Void; Kid Loki didn't.
--"We're mutants. We're never safe."
--Flashback: Sometime between 2018-2024. It's not right to screw with people's memories.
--I don't know what this rocket thing is.
--43, but your point stands.
--Interesting, "Worst Wolverine" here had Avengers in his universe.
--Dogpool is in this movie.
--Ryan Reynolds is in this movie. Um, again.
--Ok, so she's gonna be Blake Lively, got it.
--"Los Angeles Rams" SCREW STAN KROENKE. KA-KAW!
--Sir, she was a hooker, not a stripper.
--And there go the adamantium katanas.
--Does it count as product placement if you do nothing but insult the product, & only compliment it once you destroy it?
--Cue the Ragin' Cajun!
--Why is Blade here? Those weren't Fox fil...oh yeah, Reynolds was in Trinity.
--Everything about Gambit here is spectacular. The clearly-unfinished costume, Tatum pouring it all into the exaggerated accent when he grew up in the bayou & could easily do it cleaner, the jabs about his movie never happening. Love it.
--Laura provides a wonderful emotional stability to this. Her presence also speaks to Paradox's depravity; the entire point of 10005 Logan's sacrifice was so her story could CONTINUE, but he pruned her anyway.
--Is that a variant of Buck?
--"Only ever gonna be one Blade." As of Eternals, you're already wrong, Wesley.
--A Gambit fight scene that doesn't look like total crap like the one in Origins, yay!
--There's that act 3 flashback.
--Worst Juggernaut isn't completely invincible like the other versions, our little Wolverina has this handled.
--I haven't talked much about Cassandra, but that's partly because she's really captivating & so I've forgotten to comment. Emma Corrin is playing this gleeful sadist thing perfectly.
--They did a good job including all the necessary info here about the TVA so that you don't actually need to have watched Loki to understand the film at all. For example, we don't need B-15's name or backstory here; it's enough to know that she's Paradox's superior & did not know or approve of his activities.
--LOL, if you don't wanna be mocked for not being able to draw feet, then you should've learned how to draw feet.
--What, no Pandapool?
--Wade's wrong. The single biggest hit of this entire saga, which is also the 3rd-highest-grossing Marvel film ever & the 7th-highest-grossing film of all time, is No Way Home, an extremely multiversey movie. Multiverse of Madness is the 66th-highest-grosser of all time, & 2nd-highest of this saga. GotG 3 was both a critical & financial hit as well, though it's only minimally multiverse-related. Shang-Chi set a Labor Day weekend record even while a lot of theaters were still closed. The most-acclaimed project in this saga has been Loki, which was literally about *starting* the multiverse. The least-acclaimed project in this saga has been Secret Invasion, which had nothing at all to do with the multiverse. I hate that Ryan fueled the internet bad-faith nonsense here.
--You delightfully-greedy maniac.
--Wolverine's mask has always been designed based on people looking downward on it, both because comic-Logan is short & because he's usually hunched over. Jackman keeping his chin up for so much of this makes it really awkward.
--Come on, you made Hugh go back on the steamed-chicken-&-steroids diet just for this one scene?
--Yay, they got her out!
--Credits: BTS retrospective of the entire Fox Marvel film franchise.
--Post-credit scene: You still didn't have to actually tell her what he said, man.

Executive summary: There are some seams showing here that aren't ideal, but the movie is a lot of good breezy fun with really strong acting & action, an excellent sense of theme, & a mostly great sense of humor. And they did my man Gambit justice! I'm a little bummed we didn't get one of Shawn Levy's trademark quirky chase scenes, though.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
