I've always wanted a (good, so not Sonic Chronicles) Sonic RPG, and a proper JRPG by Sonic Team seems like one of the best ways to go about it. Ideally they'd unabashedly take inspiration from Nintendo and work with one of their partners like Camelot or something. I believe Camelot used to work on JRPGs with Sega back in the Genesis days, actually (with the Shining series, iirc).Sonic the Hedgehog hasn’t done much in the RPG space, but it’s something that Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka hopes to pursue.
Iizuka spoke about his interest in the genre while talking with Good Vibes Gaming. Despite acknowledging that he’d like to make a Sonic RPG happen before he retires, he was quick to point out that no concrete plans are currently in place.
Here’s what Iizuka had to say regarding a possible Sonic RPG for him to work on:
“Personally, I really like role-playing games. The RPG game format is a lot of fun, and I’ve even thought to myself, ‘You know, for the past 30 years we haven’t done a Sonic RPG.’ And I’m questioning myself, ‘Why haven’t we done an Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs? So I’d like to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG at some point before I retire from SEGA, but you know, that’s just a dream right now… there are no concrete plans at this point.”
The biggest thing Sonic has done with the RPG space was Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on DS. However, that was made by BioWare. There were actually once some ideas in place for a Sonic Chronicles sequel, which you can read about here.
In fact, just take this opportunity to do a crossover with Mario. "Paper Mario & Sonic" as part of the Paper Mario series, or "Mario & Luigi & Sonic & Tails" as part of the Mario & Luigi series (that title would be funny). I'd say Super Mario RPG 2 featuring Sonic in a collaboration with Square would be ideal...if this was 10 years ago before Square became crap.
