Cajun baked chicken (I cooked)
Garlic butter tilapia (I cooked)
Turkey veggie soup (wife cooked)
Hawaiian chalupas (eat out)

One of my friends made a reeeaaally good bowl of shrimp fried rice... had a really nice blend of veggies and shrimp, ESPECIALLY shrimp. I feel like too many shrimp fried rice skimp too much on it, which is a shame since shrimp is my favorite food!

Thursday morning, I treated Sis and Iree to breakfast in Parshall, a little town just off the res. There's a local restaurant there that serves all manner of American food with a First Nations twist--------I got a burger topped with jalapenos and ghost pepper cheddar. Side-order of deep-fried chicken gizzards.

We went out, I had oysters Kilpatrick followed by red emperor grilled fish and roasted potatoes. It was delicious. (I may have left all the brussel sprouts on my plate.)

May I ask, do you do Blue Apron or something? No judgment. I can fling a variety of stuff in a pan and cook it until it won't kill me, but usually it doesn't have an earthly name.

We do Hello Fresh, but only a handful of meals a month. In that week's menu, only the bolognese was a meal kit; the rest we cooked from scratch (or, as noted, they were restaurant meals).

Sorry, I'm just thinking about doing one of those services, is all. Like, I can navigate a TV dinner into a microwave and boil water without immolating myself, and I make a dynamite grilled cheese or reuben (or tuna melt!), but none of that's exactly rocket science.

It'd be nice to improve my cooking skills and eat good food and not spend much all at once. The YouTubers say Blue Apron and Hello Fresh and all are good for that, but they're being paid to say that----------you, you're a human man who exists in the real world, not some corporate cardboard cut-out or yeller-eyed stranger down at the crossroads; your words carry weight.

We did Blue Apron for a good while. Recently we've paused the service because the delivery schedule is kind of in conflict with the nights we have regular commitments that don't let us take the time to cook. But we did enjoy it, and it's all pretty straightforward. Mostly the meals are 25-45 minutes, but there are a few that are as short as 5 minutes of prep time before tossing a tray in the oven.

...I'm a man of simple tastes, when it comes right to it. I wouldn't give a tin shilling for some fancy-dan lobster hubriblorgh or whatever over a grilled peanut-butter-and-apple-butter-and-bananner slammer, or a home-made pizza designed to my own personal ornate eldritch specifications. It'd just be...you know, nice to have the option to make human food for humans.

So I took my ma out for dinner last night (she loves a fish fry), and I tried out a new kind of melty grilled sandwich---------Ted's calls it a hoosier melt, and it doesn't seem to be an actual thing like the reuben, but it's still super nice. Sliced turkey, cheddar, bacon, lettuce and tomato with mayo. Ordinarily I don't like turkey or bacon, but this combination worked. This one's going in the compendium, and since it isn't a real thing I feel no qualms about switching the turkey out for roast beef or honey ham, or the cheddar for a less basic-bitch cheese like mahon or havarti, or pepper-jack. And of course I'd change out the mayo for Miracle Whip-------------this is a Christian household, we don't keep the devil's filthy mayonnaise here.

So hey, just out of curiosity and community, what did you guys get? Like, what did your parents bring you up eating?

We had Miracle Whip, never mayonnaise. Mom wasn't entirely averse to buying Kraft Singles when we were poor as church mice, but she never bought Wonderbread or any white bread in general ("the whiter the bread, the sooner you're dead"----------gee, ma, tell me you weren't brought up by superstitious hillbillies). We had crunchy peanut butter---------only time we ever had creamy was if ma was baking something. (Crunchy is better. Come fight me, creamy peanut butter namby-pambies-----------I'll chomp through your bones with my mighty crunchy peanut butter-devouring jaws.)

We had pancakes. Waffles require a whole other bougie apparatus------------pancakes for the people! (*soviet anthem*) Oh, and screw off if you want whipped cream and fruit on your pancakes-------------maple syrup. Butter: optional. (Sriracha: yes please.)

...mom has a sausage grinder. I don't know nobody else who grew up with a sausage grinder in the house. Mostly she used it to grind up bologna for ham salad, but sometimes she ground venison or elk or unicorn or bison or antelope or rabbit or squirrel for burgers or meat loaf.

My oma made a lot of lentil soup, meatloaf, stew with potatoes, sausage and spinach, and little cheese omelettes served on a piece of toast. I also remember she would make super sugary corn flakes and sweet tea.

Miracle Whip. I only had normal mayo from restaurants until I got married (my wife hates Miracle Whip).
Homemade pancakes, but frozen waffles. Pancakes were topped with butter & syrup. Waffles could be butter, syrup, peanut butter, jelly, whatever.
Creamy peanut butter.
Wheat/white mostly depended on which batch had a better expiration date when my dad went shopping, but he leaned towards wheat bread most of the time.
Kraft singles when we were little & dad made our school lunches most days, but we switched to better cheese later, much to his relief.

...I don't understand the mayonnaise people. I pity them. I wish I could help them, but at the end of the day, you cannot help people who will not help themselves.

On the flipside, anyone who buys a Hershey's Cookies N' Cream of their own volition is almost certainly a shoggoth or blackula or poultrygoost or something. Watch them, take notes, and ready thy anvil.
