Re: Current game?
Well, if this helps you, the first 'Dark Forces' had sprite enemies, whereas all the enemies from 'Dark Forces II' onward were polygonal.
...boy, the original SW vibes are strong in 'Dark Forces'. SW was still just three movies back in '95 (possibly five movies, if you're cool). Nevermind the prequels, this is from before even 'Han shot first'. Man alive.

Re: Current game?
Oh yeah, it's gotta be DF2 then. It was actually pretty graphically impressive to me at the time.
The last time Star Wars was cool was Soulcalibur 4, they didn't mesh as well with the universe as SC2's guests did, but I'm a sucker for crossovers and Starkiller was a good character. I guess even by then the SW feel was pretty different though.

Re: Current game?
...I really liked 'Masters of Teras Kasi'. I would never claim it was good, per se, but I was super into it.
Arden Lyn is great. There aren't many radass Star Wars ladies in the canon movies (the originals got Leia, the prequels gots Padme, and then in the sequels for every cool Ray there's a smelly Holdo sucking it up)-----------fortunately the EU has the likes of Arden Lyn and Nomi Sunrider and Jan Ors and Mara Jade and Lumiya and Cindel Towani and Kneesaa for little girl SW fans to look up to. Yeah.

Cool Ray?! Is that a typo, Boo?
Yeah, Dragon Ball is like that too, largely male centric in the main canon but the extended universe stuff has lots of girls.

Re: Current game?
Ray was the best new thing in TFA. She was a big part of what gave me hope for the new trilogy. She was still good in 'Last Jedi', but the movie in general was so heinous that I didn't bother with 'Rise', and it seems like I didn't miss much.
...besides, who cares what I say is 'cool'? I'm the biggest dorko ever------------I just said the Ewok Adventures were cool, for crying out loud.

The difference is you were right about Ewok Adventures! Weird one-off kinda stuff is interesting, like that Christmas special. Sucks that kinda stuff doesn't happen much anymore (or I just don't notice).

Ooh, the Holiday Special.
I should add Ackmena to my list of SWEU icons for girls to hero-worship. Ackmena is the kind of glittering star that people fight wars for.

I've been getting into Last Epoch, which is the new Diablo-clone of the moment. I'm not like a Diablo vet, closest I come is PSO, but it's really scratching an itch that I've had recently so I'm digging it.
And for shorter sessions where a run-based thing is good, I've finally started Noita which is a blast, and Balatro, the hot new deckbuilder game based on video poker. I love card games and I especially love twists on traditional card games. I'm very excited for the "soon" release of Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, which is a blackjack roguelike. The demo was a blast.

I still like Titan Quest. Haven't really played any of the other games in the genre, except for the first two Torchlight games.

So, uhh, possible controversial viewpoint------------I actually despised having guest characters in Soul Calibur games. I was super into SoulCal even before it was SoulCal (I specifically bought my PSX so I could play 'Soul Blade' at home instead of only on the cabinet at the bowling alley arcade. I played other games later, yes, but 'Soul Blade' was my silver bullet).I REALLY HATE POKEMON! wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 12:13 amThe last time Star Wars was cool was Soulcalibur 4, they didn't mesh as well with the universe as SC2's guests did, but I'm a sucker for crossovers and Starkiller was a good character. SoulCal mattered to me in the same stupid kind of way that SW and X-Men did, and I was extremely displeased to see dirtbags from other media getting flung in. I didn't want crappy Link from garbagey MM polluting my golden child---------I was there to see Siegfried and Seung Mina and Xianghua, dammit. Not Link, and certainly not Spawn. And then, boy, I sure wasn't happy to see SW guys in SC4. I wanted to get the hell away from Yoda, man. I kind of hate him.

Re: Current game?
For my money, Andor is near the best Star Wars has ever been. It's right up there with ESB and the throne room confrontation in RotJ for me. Petunia Dursley had me ready to bash a Stormtrooper's head with a brick by the end.
Course, it's hard to compare shows and movies to video games. The interactivity of them adds a whole other layer of subjectivity to the experience. I was big into KotOR, and I was pretty disappointed when I heard the remake got axed.

Re: Current game?
...I think about stuff too much. I should like Yoda, presumably (?), only he and Ghost Ben really go all-in on hosing Luke. They teach him good things training-wise, but they don't tell him nothing, and then they instruct him to do bad, bad biz.
Like, I'm sure it's different for other people, but if I were Luke gettin back to Dagobah in 'Jedi', I'd have been flippin furious, right. 'Hey, Yoda and Ben, you should have told me Darth Vader was my dad. You guys suck. You misled me, and it's unacceptable.' Man alive.
Like, if I found out Leia was my sister, I would not have been okay. I would be like, 'You knew. You knew she was my twin sister, and you advised me to sacrifice her during the last movie. Is this what being a Jedi is about? Because if so, f*ck being a Jedi-------I'm getting the hell out of here. I'm going to save my dad and save the world, and you can both screw off.' And that's pretty much exactly what happened, except Luke doesn't hate Ben and Yoda as much, because he's a better person than I am.

That would have been fair. They're blinded by their guilt and their fear and they can't see any path forward but to use the boy to kill their mistakes away. Maybe Luke sees it as pitiable.

Re: Current game?
...it's just...are Ben and Yoda actually stupid? They completely botched Anakin's training, and so then their next chancet straight out the gate, it's like they take every possible opportunity to screw up Luke's training. Just lying to him constantly. Like, when Ben starts saying "what I said was true...from a certain point of view," I think of my dad.
Ben is not a good person. Just because you're a Jedi, that doesn't make you a good person.
If Ben were a good person, 'Phantom Menace' would have been like a half-hour shorter. He would have gone from "learning Anakin is an actual slave" to "forcing Watto to manumit Anakin and his mom and any other slaves Watto owned on pain of death" in like fifteen seconds. Ben and dirtbag Qui-Gon didn't do that, because why. Why, why, why. Why.
Part of the reason we loathe the Empire is that they used Wookiee slave labour to build the Death Star. Slavery is inherently evil. It is. There is no counterargument. And yet, the Jedi are perfectly fine with leading the Clone Army into battle. Were the clones asked if they wanted to fight? What's their pay like? Do they get dental?

Re: Current game?
^Based on the Clone Wars cartoon: They do, in fact, get dental, & they're compensated during the war.
Based on the Kenobi miniseries, though: After the war, they were largely abandoned & expected to die off quickly from their rapid aging.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Re: Current game?
Yeah, I kinda twigged that from the Republic Commando books.
You know, if I wanted extreme moral complexity, I wouldn't be watching Star Wars, I'd be watching 'Battle of Algiers', or 'Mother Night'. When's the 'Escape From Sobibor' Holiday Special coming out?

Re: Current game?
Been on a mobile game kick recently (aside from Dragon Ball Dokkan, which I always play).
Sling Kong pulled me in with the quirky title and cute character. It's not great, I expected something more akin to Donkey Kong Jungle Climber or Angry Birds, but it's even simpler. It's not bad but doesn't keep my interest, although I might come back to it. I also think the music could be a bit more fitting, it's really generic and doesn't scream "monkey" like Ape Escape or Donkey Kong, with more energetic vibes. I will say the controls are surprisingly accurate for a phone game, which often is decidedly NOT the case. And I know it's a phone game but the graphics could be a little better, the art style is nice and cartoony but the actual graphics feel cheap. It sounds like a lot of complaints but it's ok.
I barely tried Pokemon Go early on and wasn't into it, I liked the concept but not the execution. Decided to try it again, figuring maybe it improved over the years, but it turns out it's even worse in some ways. I often like to play as girls in video games but apparently a relatively new update only lets you play as a male, but retained feminine clothing. There's been a trend of replacing "pick your gender" with "pick your body type" (effectively no impact on game design, just a shift in terminology) in gaming for years now but this is the first instance I've seen of actually removing the option...
Revisited another older mobile game, Angry Birds. I was actually looking for Angry Birds Rio but didn't see it, I'm guessing it was removed because of licensing issues or something, which is too bad because it was my favorite one. So much for the all-digital future the industry is moving to, huh? Luckily I think there's a physical edition for 3DS/Wii U and other last gen consoles (none of which I have), but still. Anyway, I'm complaining again...but the original Angry Birds is fine too. I just really liked the more tropical aesthetic of Rio a lot more, but they're obviously extremely similar otherwise, with just different stages and one less bird type. Worth noting is the Star Wars versions seem gone too btw.
Hiehachi at least is pretty close to Soulcalibur and fits better than Spawn or Yoda. It feels more natural, like a Capcom/SNK crossover or something. And you gotta admit, Starkiller was cool, even if he didn't belong. He's like Star Wars' DBZ guy, doing all kinds of overpowered stuff. Empty kinda character but cool.

Could've swore I responded to this. Anyway, I understand where you're coming from, crossovers are a controversial concept. I think if they fit well then it's not bad, but still understand it can damage the integrity of a franchise. I think the worst offenders are random inclusions that clash with the source material, like Tekken's often do.Booyakasha wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 2:37 pmSo, uhh, possible controversial viewpoint------------I actually despised having guest characters in Soul Calibur games. Hmmmm. When did Starkiller cross over with SoulCal? I haven't played a new game in the series since SCIV. What are they up to, six now?
I guess...like I said, I'm there for Siegfried and Sophitia and Hilde and all-------------guest characters pointlessly take up a spot in the roster that could be filled by an old legacy character.

He was with Vader & Yoda under the title The Apprentice, I believe. They are the same character to my knowledge, but I'm not much of a Star Wars guy really, aside from the sequels and a few games.Booyakasha wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 4:32 amHmmmm. And yeah, they're up to SC6 now, but they're no good anymore. Too bad too, SC6 has some good guests, unlike SC5... Only SC1-4 are very good games (aside from the guest stuff I mean, in general SC5 & 6 are just bad period) plus Broken Destiny, the PSP spinoff featuring Kratos. That one's super overlooked and underrated imo.
Yeah, but Yoshimitsu is a mainstay between both Tekken and Soulcalibur, so I just think Tekken crossovers make some sense. Don't they take place in the same universe? In any case, I like the SC cast more than any guests. Mitsurugi is the damn coolest guy.

Re: Current game?
I seem to recall they added finishing moves in SCIV. Just exactly what this once-great fighting series needed-----------to take a page from Mortal Stupid Kombat. Gross.
I like 'Mortal Kombat: The Album' and 'Mortal Kombat: The Extraordinarily Silly Motion Picture'. I'm even strangely fond of 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation', despite it being the stupidest movie in the universe. But I cannot get into a Mortal Kombat game to save my life. They have always been pathetic compared to the SNK and Capcom fighters. I don't give a crap about finishing moves, I want to master Mary's Dynamite Swing.
