Oscars 2023

#1

Post by CaptHayfever » Tue Jan 24, 2023 12:42 pm

Nominations were just announced.

Multiple nominees:
11 - Everything Everywhere All at Once
9 - All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisheran
8 - Elvis
7 - The Fabelmans
6 - Tar, Top Gun: Maverick
5 - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
4 - Avatar: The Way of Water
3 - Babylon, The Batman, Triangle of Sadness, The Whale
2 - Living, Women Talking

My predictions/picks:

Picture: EEAAO. (Several of these nominees are bonkers.)
Director: The Daniels
Original Screenplay: EEAAO
Adapted Screenplay: Glass Onion
Lead Actor: Brendan Fraser
Lead Actress: Michelle Yeoh
Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan
Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett or we riot.
Animated Feature: Puss in Boots
Animated Short: dunno
Doc Feature: dunno
Doc Short: How Do You Measure a Year looks genuinely interesting.
International Feature: All Quiet on the Western Front, based on how many other noms it got.
Live Short: dunno
Cinematography: Elvis
Film Editing: It'd be weird if it wasn't EEAAO.
Song: "Lift Me Up"
Score: Fabelmans, in case Williams dies before he finishes Indy 5.
Sound: tossup between Elvis or Top Gun, but Batman could dark-horse it.
Production Design: Avatar 2
Costume Design: I *want* Wakanda Forever, but it'll *be* Elvis.
Makeup/Hair: tossup between Batman & Whale, but Wakanda Forever could dark-horse it.
Visual Effects: obviously Avatar 2, but I *want* it to be The Batman.

Showtime: March 12th.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I'm hoping Puss in Boots wins, too!!
She lives in the clouds and talks to the birds...

Happiest faerie of VGF.

I would be fine with Ke Huy Quan winning the Best Supporting Actor nomination. I haven't seen the movie, but I would like to see him win.

...Short Round is probably my favourite Indiana Jones character. I like Shorty a whole real lot. He saves Indy a whole bunch in 'Temple'. Indy has to save himself and Sallah and Marcus and Henry and Marian a lot in the other two movies---------meanwhile Shorty saves himself and Indy a lot in 'Temple'. Shorty takes names like an evil little sumbitch. And then also...Shorty cheats at cards better than Indy. He makes Indy look like a flippin fool. He smiles his way out of it. It's good.

[EDIT: Also he was Data! He was a Goonie! What, R The Goonies not Good Enough to win an Oscar? Go soak your head in brine if you say they aren't.]

I am going to be honest. Nobody should care anything what Hollywood do or say at this point. [removed]

Nailed it: Supporting Actor, Makeup & Hair, Costume Design (my *guess* was wrong, but the one I *wanted* won), International Feature, Visual Effects, Original Screenplay, Sound, Editing, Director, Actor (suck it, HFPA!), Actress, Picture.
Failed it: Supporting Actress (I am NOT pleased), Animated Feature, Cinematography, Doc Short, Production Design (but I AM pleased), Score, Adapted Screenplay, Song.
12 right out of 20 guesses out of 23 categories.

Other thoughts: Why would you dishonor the In Memoriam people by having Lenny Kravitz play over their montage?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Dishonorable behavior doesn't seem to be a concern at the Oscar's. That kind of stuff may be why their ratings aren't good anymore.

^It was very much a concern. Will Smith was forced to resign from the Academy & is banned from the Oscar ceremony for 10 years. The tradition of the previous Best Actor winner awarding Best Actress had to be broken; Halle Berry presented that award last night instead.

If you're referring to my other comment, Lenny Kravitz didn't *do* anything dishonorable; he just sucks.

The Will Smith incident is what immediately came to mind, yeah. For assaulting someone over a joke I find that to be light punishment though.

But there's others stuff too, like this year alone with them not addressing the Sacheen Littlefeather controversy, Jimmy Kimmel's exceptionable Irish stereotype joke, and such. In general the behavior surrounding the Oscar's is often questionable at best.
