Fire Emblem just got a remake for the DS, so it happens, and the game is very good.
You can't improve on its status as the original, that's for certain. I'm disinterested in remakes, unless they're going to give some seriously out-of-date software a just treatment, like Konami is with its Castlevania Adventures titles at the moment.

The funny and sad thing about remakes is is if they change it too much everyone says it violates the spirit and doesn't stay true to the original game, whereas if they don't change enough, it's complained for doing just that.

Well yeah, I'd rather play a sequel or otherwise new game than one that totally screws up the original. And of course I don't really want another copy of the exact same game with different sprites, I need something more to attract me.

What's especially strange to me is how some folks seem to confuse re-releases and ports with remakes. If you already own the game, you're probably not the target of a re-release.

It should, and whether or not it will depends on whether people and Nintendo and Square Can work together on it.

Mostly I want character introduced in that game to be able to come back, Boshi should be in the Yoshi games, Geno kicks @$$, and many of the new Species there where cool as well.

And Smithy is the biggest Mario Villain to absolutely only appear once.

That's why I'm getting Lunar: Silver Star remake.
a) New story events.
b) I don't HAVE Silver star story complete or even the original. (Becuase I don't have a Sega CD)
c) They may decide to remake Eternal Blue if it sells well enough and I really liked that one.

Sim Please tell me that this Lunar game will be Wii-Ware or VC fair I may have complete but I'll be damned if I let this game fade into nothing.

The Bureau wrote:I can agree that Square and Enix both ain't what they used to be as far as relevance and creativity go, but it looks like you're neglecting a lot here.

SMRPG managed to create a lot of concepts unique to SMRPG, not just Mario or RPG's. It also set the standard for the battle system that pretty much every Mario RPG game has used since. Just because it didn't have some stupid plot that revolved around Koopa's obsession with being a jackass doesn't make it somehow more generic.

To humor the "generic jrpg" crap, since when have you not been collecting crap in most Mario games? As far as the story elements go, it derives heavily from the star road in SMW. The seven stars are a better plot than rescuing Toadstool for the 90th time. Besides, Mario's been collecting **** starting most recognizably with SMB3.I can't say I've really seen any characters resembling Geno or Mallow in any other game, and I think the whole part with Booster is 100% great original Mario-style character and plot.

If anything the other games are just becoming less relevant in succession as much as Square is as a company. Back when SMRPG came out, I would've loved a sequel. Nintendo was following Miyamoto off into lala land, though, and turned out Paper Mario. Decent game? Maybe, but not particularily compelling considering the history of the series and the genre.

And why can Square not make Square-style games? If you don't like that, no problem, but the whole problem with JRPGs as a whole is that they are all made in imitation of Square or Enix.

Considering your weak JRPG argument even further, the game's lacking a romantic sub plot, an overworld with random battles, a catastrophic and yet obvious plot twist, airship or any kind of air travel... It really seems like what you're missing about SMRPG is that it lampoons standard RPG story elements. Did you really take Mallow's orphan status, and his thinking he was a frog to be a serious effort in the direction of a JRPG cliche? Do you think Bowser being over turned in the first 2 minutes of the game was an attempt at a serious "the head bad guy isn't the real head badguy" archetype?

And this supposed lack of "Mario" elements... in what other RPGs exactly do you jump around the world hitting blocks? Travel via green pipes? Ride Yoshi dinosaurs? How exactly do you think Mario's actions were defined in game, in canon up to that point? SMRPG invented Mario's personality, in game. It was unprecedented and has since been overshadowed by whatever the hell it is you think makes a Mario game.
by generic jrpg i mean it plays like a final fantasy game, not that it has story elements typical in final fantasy games. IE attack magic item run. yes i know it had timed hits.

im not stupid ojkkkkk.

Well yeah, I'd rather have a SoM style Mario RPG, but I'm not expecting it.

PM has never really departed from the standard battle format at all, anyway, it's all turn based and essentially you're manipulating the same menu elements in disguise. Tactical Mario would be epic. Honestly, concerning appearances, I'd say that SMRPG strongly resembles something more like Ogre Battle than it does FF.

^ At one point me and PK discussed a Nintendo TRPG and came up with some cool ideas about a FFT pardoy.

Mario sure is a flexible character; seems he can pull off just about anything, so I don't think a TRPG wold be out of the question.

Sorry to get off topic.

It seems to me that the only video game genre Mario hasn't appeared in is survival/horror. He's done everything else, including action-adventure, RPG, sports, racing, fighting, puzzle, edutainment, and even FPS (Yoshi's Safari).

Then again, if we could count Luigi's Mansion as survival/horror......

Hotel Mario was survival/horror.

Because it was so horrifyingly bad, just trying to play it was a test of survival.

I've thought of the idea of making Luigi's Mansion 2 more horror oriented, mostly for my own amusement.

Also, I may want to play SMRPG sometime >_>

Mario's been kidnapped by demons. Luigi and Peach have to investigate the mansion to find him and rescue him from the rotting clutches of unholy monsters. Luigi's totally buffed and has a shotgun. Peach wears something skintight and always has the camera focusing on her butt or her chest.

Yeahhhhhhhhh.
