^Not sure if you should spoiler that one or not, but Chrono Cross has been out a while and I'm fairly certain most everyone was aware of that fact. I'll let CSM make the call here.

Seeing as the game has been around for awhile and most people who're still active in this forum have been sitting next to me munching popcorn during the famous Jay vs Bolt arguments on Chrono Cross....

^^Meh. CC's been out for at least 10 years now I think. I don't care about spoiler tags there anymore. Especially for CC. -CSM

I vote for Kefka, yeah I know big surprize given that it's both the first FF game (and RPG) I played and my favoret. However a thought just struck me because of this topic. given how the slave crown and it's side effects are common knowlege it make me wonder just where the thing came from and how many were in use.

I suppose Kefka, and heck, most of the villians before VI, their actions seemed to have a more direct effect on your characters and made them feel more evil overall. Garland is a little iffy as you didn't really find out he was responsible for the plight until the end of the game, but the Emperor killed your parents, tried to enslave an entire empire, and killed an entire warrior class of Dragoons. Golbez was about as bad, destorying countless kingdoms and stealing the crystals, although who knows where that evil gets creditted, was is Zeromus? If it was Golbez he turns good at the end of the game so that villainy is sort of ruined. Exdeath wanted to kill everyone, but his evil didn't seem as bad, probabaly because the characters really weren't that relatable . . .

It seems with the newer Final Fantasies, the main villian doesn't seem to perform that much either against anyone who isn't the main male and female heroes, and the rest of the cast act as back-up. Final Fantasy VII had strong back-up characters, but most times Sephiroth didn't seem like the one who wronged them, it was more Hojo or Shinra who made them join the group and Sephiroth just ended up being the evil that happened afterwards that they had to clean up. Ultimecia, beyond Squall and Rinoa you really didn't get much of a feel of why the other character were even involved, except they were just part of the team, 0 character growth hurt that one. AGain X had stronger characters, but in the end it seems more like Seymour, Jecht, Sin, and the Yu Yevon religion in general were more the villian, and Yu Yevon himself. By the time the team faces him he was really just a mindless spirit, and acted mechanically based on his summoning history.

^Bring in FFXII, and Vayne really doesn't have any connection to any of the main cast, although Cid has a connection to Balthier. -CSM

Another thing is that the Post 6 games have established sub-villains, or at least moreso than others.

Final Fantasy 5 has Exdeath and Gilgamesh, but he makes a heel-face turn later on and everyone else working for exdeath are more or less just monsters who act as bosses.

^FFVI still had Gestahl. The only game where the sub-villain worked independently of the villain was FFVII. -CSM
