FFVI Single Character Challenge

#1

Post by Crazyswordsman » Sat Aug 08, 2009 9:32 pm

Can you beat FFVI using one character, and ONLY that character, for the entire game (except at points where they're not normally available)? Can you do it without Espers? Without the Merit Award? Without the Illumina?

Well, I'm trying to do that now, and I can't.

I'm playing as Terra and I can't even get past Kefka in Narshe. -CSM

I could see it being possible... but only if you were using Terra.

I actually beat Kefka just now. I got lucky and he didn't use Ice 2, which was what killed Terra every time.

It's actually been proven that it's possible with every character except Umaro. -CSM

^Yep. Think about it; how hard could it be when characters have access to everything normally? Ultima, Cure 3, Osmose, rinse, lather, repeat. Kind of boring, no? Well, Terra is the easiest one of course, with True Gogo being the hardest possible one (Umaro isn't possible). -CSM

Is there a specific reason it's impossible with Umaro?

He's uncontrollible and can't heal himself would be my guess.

Yeah I could see this working. Now I'll have to find my copy and try it. Also for the other characters do you just play as Terra till you get them?

It's impossible for Umaro because you can't equip him. The berserk isn't even as big a factor as the limited equipment. The person got to the final boss with him, but wasn't able to beat it because of the number of accessories needed and the inability to switch equipment between fights. The Ribbon is required, Miracle/Marvel Shoes is pretty mandatory as well. Unfortunatley if you do that there's no way to block tier three's Calmness attack (OHKO). If you swap either of those accessories, you can fall prey to a number of status effects OR you won't be able to be healed through all four tiers.

^Don't forget that even if you survive Calmness by some miracle, when you get to Kefka, you will most likely eat a HyperDrive counter because you can't control. -CSM

So as Terra all by herself, with no magic learned that she doesn't learn naturally (I learned two spells: Ultima and Cure 2, using Espers/Magic teaching equipment, but she learns those naturally), all I have left to do is Kefka's Tower (and the Magimaster, but I'm not going to bother since all beating him proves is you have too much time on your hands and not that you're any good at the game). -CSM

Well I finally beat the damn thing. It was mostly pretty easy, but damn, Kefka was HARD.

Now should I do a Perfect Game next or a Locke SCC next? -CSM

If you don't mind me asking CSM what's the best speed run for FFVI?

I'm really not trying to disrespect the ideas but are you trying to play through FF6 in every way possible? Doesn't it get boring?

I'd say the fun comes from taking on a challenge and beating it, though that's just a guess as I've never tried speed runs or other self imposed challenges before.

^^^I don't do speed runs.

^^This is something I always wanted to try out. I would like to try and beat FFVI in many different ways.

^Exactly. Plus you get to see how the game would work if not everyone could use magic. -CSM

Ah thanks for answering that. As for me the only things I don't like about replaying FFVI are the timed sections, and uncursing the Paliden sheild. I know that lattter isn't required but it's so damn usefull.
