And behind it are Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

All RPGs not starring Mario are irrelevant.

How many RPGs have you actually played? The Mario RPGs are good games, but they're far from the best ever made.

The Mario ones, and Skies of Arcadia Legends.

^^ That is not a good sample of JRPG games. Chrono Trigger is practically deified in JRPG circles, along with FFVI. SMRPG is a very good JRPG (it was my first), and it ranks along with those two, in my mind.

What interests me is the context in which those games were released; I think it adds to the appreciation of them, like knowing the vintage of a fine wine. CT was made by the "dream team". FFVI was the last FF on the SNES. SMRPG was the last project Square had with Nintendo. Every now and then I stumble upon an article about things like that and I just eat those up.

I haven't played the Paper Mario games. I was unimpressed with Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.

Super Mario RPG is probably in my top 10 games of all time though.

Nah, there was that Mario Basketball game for the DS that Square made.

SMRPG is pretty damn good, but the Paper Mario series lacks immensity in scope IMO.

In my order:

1. Super Mario RPG
2. Paper Mario
3. MLSS
4. Paper Mario II
(4.5 would be SPM, but it's more of an action RPG anyway, so it doesn't count)
5. MLBIS
6. MLPIT
shane nuked my best posts

Well, I was referring to the epic falling-out they had when they jumped ship to Sony. Recently, they've become best buddies and play poker together every Thursday.

SMRPG is a great RPG. It's not the greatest RPG, though, but I'd say it was probably my favorite Mario RPG, followed by Super Paper Mario (which IS an RPG, if only not a traditional one).

I think Mother 3, Fire Emblem and Tales of Symphonia would like a word with you.

Also SMRPG...is like my favorite game evur...that being said I won't say it's the best RPG of all time.

SMRPG was a good game, but I wouldn't put it in my Top Whatever List. I liked the Paper games better.

FF, LoL, FFT, LSSSC, and FFVI would like to have words with you.

@ Ace wasn't Square working on some sort of 3D FFVI project that eventualy became FFVII?

With Mario, they're the trifecta of perfection.
