NC Revival Topic

#1

Post by Metal Man » Fri Feb 06, 2009 8:15 pm

As president of NC, I feel it is my mission to help revive NC. I have already put up a Deathmatch, and will in time make more things for NC.

But NC does not stand for "Metal Man's Neglected Characters." It is for all of the Neglected Mario Characters we see in this forum.

Therefore in this topic I organize user contributions and do my best to get them approved and put up on NC. My goal: To keep NC updated relatively frequently.

Current Issues/Plans:
Revive Dr. Donez's... Section... Thingy -Laika and... whoever participates
Ongoing Storyline-style Comic - Metal Man, but also with everyone's input
Deathmatches n' Shorts - Everyone

Now here's the deal. You guys pitch ideas at me, and make comics. I only ask they be NC-esque, and look clean enough that they aren't out of place. Also they should be at least mildly funny. :p

I'll just be the representative, I.E. I will take what you make/pitch and in turn to pitch it to Sean. Whatever he then approves I will put up. Through this convoluted process quality can be assured, but we also will be able to bring NC up from the dead.

I'd also want to see Jay's opinion of this. Naturally, it must be strange to see me spearheading an effort to save his site. But, that's me for you.

Also, a note for people who haven't seen me manage projects before--My VGF 'persona' has little to do with getting work done. But as MBP's comic said... when it comes to projects I'm working on, I never give up and keep going.

I picked up SSQ as it was dying, nearly 6 years ago, and with the help of other members revived it. I also tried and managed to at least help SSS. I also revived a Sonic-based IRC RPG. Nc has always been one of my original favorite comix--now I wish to revive it as well!

Oh, but there is one question... the ads. The intellitxt ads sort of mess up Deathmatches. And we need a way to rearrange the ad header so it won't mess up the order of images. I know the ads are needed to... well, I don't know what they're needed for, :p . I pay my freight and have enough bandwidth to host NC ad-free as it is, but I won't push that topic. (NC must stay at SMBHQ anyway--it belongs there) I just humbly ask that NC deathmatches be exempt from the intellitxt nonsense.

In other news, those ads really mess up the Deathmatch pages. What do you guys think?
Nice to see one. Although the end was quite obvious, as this happened many times before.

I don't think the ad on the right side "messes the page up". Nevertheless I don't like it very much.
The fact that it creates some free lines after the first picture can't be very difficult to correct. Why don't you just do it? It doesn't change something for the viewers, because the ad's still on the right side, just without free lines on the left.

I'm afraid it is harder to correct than it looks. The html included in the ad puts in a lot of gibberish, which in turn makes a large break. At that specific place, even though html-wise it appears far above the comic.

And it's not that line break which worries me. It's the intellitxt, which sort of harms the lines of Poser and Orlando by making their lines all kinds of weird colors and putting hyperlinks in on random phrases.

Then again, I may just integrate text INTO the deathmatch next time (in addition to making the next one a bit less unpredictable--I was just setting up with that one) since that dodges the intellitxt entirely.

YAY! It's great to have a new deathmatch again! It feels like I'm back in high school (except without the lame parts).

I admit, the ending was rather cliche. But for what amounts to a "revival" match, a simple match like this fits, I think.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind helping out with some new comix or deathmatches or whatever, now that I have a little more free time.

Yeeh, so many people want to help, may as well be clear...

submit all ye deathmatches and shorts to [email protected] . Be sure to use a fairly obvious email or indicator I know you, since.. otherwise it's hard to tell.

I'll then act as a quality control filter. Not a snooty or elitist one; just I can give tips on the very small things which, if followed, help ensure that while your thoughts and ideas are used, you are also sticking within the rather wide gauge of style that is NC.

Of course, most of the people who are offering have proven themselves capable of this and much more, so I mean this more for, say, something like if CSM wanted to send something to me. His comics are fine, but things like the burning yellow text would need to be... er... helped.

Heck, if my own VP submitted some stuff, I'd definitely remind him to send PNGs without JPG artifacts and also avoid blinding text.

Heck, this reminds me what I wanted to do four years ago :( I wanted to do nearly the same thing like you, accepting user generated content, filter it and put good-quality ones online.
Although it's a little sad that I have to see some different person now to realize this, it's definitely a very good thing it happens at all.
I hope people will still send in stuff in a few months when election's forgotten already. :)

I'd like to try to revive some the misc. stuff on the site. Like the downloads and such. I'm itching to write some HTML.

Also, I will have many shorts made in the next few years.

I think it's fairly safe to say right now that I'm pretty much retired from NC. I'll be glad to respond to any requests for my opinion on anything. And I would appreciated being asked before anything major is done to the site. But as it stands, I am fine with having NC becoming a fan-controlled and updated website.

Just let me know if there's anything I can help with. Send a PM.

If I had time I'd write something. I doubt it would be a big comix such as LotW was (for those of you who weren't so sure, that took two full days for each episode I wrote (and when is Chunky gonna write his? He said he was gonna do some)), but maybe a short or something. -CSM

Okay then, I'll soon be free from math. In the meantime, my VP has some idea in the pipe, and I'll probably put up a short sooner or later (since me winning isn't so shocking.) As I said earlier, send your stuff to me and/or Sean so we can ensure NC is updated regularly.

I was thinking of doing a Donez blog instead of an Ask Dr. Donez revival. However, this means that some space will need to be reserved for the blog script. Are you okay with this, Sean?

A new short will be up shortly. Ha ha ha, bad joke.

Also, kudos to Alph for his new comic.
