Your hometown of Dalebrook has been in an excited state as of late. Your mentor, Malfael Dragonne's old mentor, Tiryal, is supposed to stop by sometime this week to give the apprentice mages a lesson. Tiryal is an old mage, rumored to know close to a hundred keys at the master level. He's one of the top Arch Mages in the kingdom.
Dalebrook is an ordinary trading town of a little over two thousand people. The only thing unusual about the town is the presence of Maelfael. He is running his own private magic tutorship of several children in town, having about twenty apprentices. You are the best of them, with only a child named Derek being close to your level (he's about the only person in town aside from his friends who dislikes you). Malfael is your uncle (your father's brother). Your father owns the town's largest weapon-smithy. He's rather proud of you for being so talented, he was never able to learn magic.
You woke up a bit late and are running late for your morning lessons. You'll be late if you stop to eat, but you may not have enough energy for your uncle's lessons if you decide to skip breakfast. Morning lessons are by the river today.
What do you want to do?
-----
Btw, Thats a very good focus you have there, especially at your character's current level. It would be very expensive to replace, if you want to switch it out for something a bit weaker, cheaper and more generic, I'll let you reallocate those points.
Also, what does your character look like? just curious.

Hadn't thought much of looks. As for the focus, I'll keep it.
He has white smooth skin with a tiny golden tint, enough to make his skin darker than a pale white color. He has blue eyes, blond hair that covers his forehead, ears, that drops down to the top tips of his ears. He has a small figure since he is too young to develop powerful muscles, but as any child has extreme amounts of energy. He is about four feet tall and weighs about one hundred pounds. (He's has an average height and weight if those numbers seem off). He wears a collared shirt and usually wears beige pants with brown leather shoes.
---
Cyran woke up and saw the bright sun rays beating through the window in his room. He bathed in the warm summer rays for a few moments before realizing exactly what time it was.
He nearly jumped out of bed and immediately stripped himself of his night attire and opened up his closet. Inside he pulled out a beige pair of pants and a blue collared shirt and tied his shoes together within nearly half of a minute.
He rushed into the kitchen, who he was greeted by his mother.
"Good morning son! Did you sleep well last night?"
"I'll see you this afternoon Mum, I love you!"
"Wait, honey! You forgot to eat your breakfast!"
However, Cyran was already out of the door and heading towards the river. Cyran couldn't afford to be late, especially with that Derek kid who had a perfect attendance record, next to himself.
Within a few minutes Cyran arrived at the river, panting. The rest of the apprentices were already gathered near the river. It seemed that his Uncle had stalled for a few minutes while waiting for Cyran to arrive.
"Bless him!" Cyran thought to himself. He looked over at Derek, who was staring his direction with a distasteful look, and gave him a grin.
"Alright, with a few seconds to spare, we will begin our class a little early today..." His uncle started.

Your uncle begins to speak.
"For today's morning lessons, we'll be practing with the Control and Water keys I've taught you. First, let's review what we learned last week.
"The Control Key allows you shape natural forces that already in exist. It is one of the most powerful and one of the most adaptable Action keys in the world. In order to use it, you need to concentrate on what you wish to control. The Key will work on anything that you can see, hear or feel. It works best when concentrated on a single target, but it can be done simaltaneously on many targets, if you are good at it."
As he's talking, Malfael points at the river and a single drop of water floats into the air. He traces his finger around in the air, making a number of shapes and patterns. The droplot starts zipping around at crazy speed, doing loops, figure 8s, following the path Malfael traces, within a split second of his hand gestures.
"If you try and control more targets or a larger target, it becomes more difficult and takes more concentration and energy."
He stops speaking and faces the river directly. He raises both hands into the air and hundreds of water droplets raise from the water and start flying through the air in convulted patterns. No two droplets follow the same pattern. After nearly two minutes and quite an impressive display, the water falls back into the river.
"If the action is unnatural for the target or if the target resists, than the effort becomes extremely tiring and the spell may fail or have a weaker effect than you intended."
Malfael makes a sweeping motion with his hand, along the riverbank, going upstream. The river flow slows for a moment, and than the flow of water reverses itself, and a wave travels upstream for about 10 yards and than collapses back into the water. A few moments later the river flow returns to normal. Malfael's face scrunches up and he lets out a sigh. He pauses for a moment to catch his breath.
"Changing the course of the river like I just did would be beyond your level at the moment. At the most you would get a faint ripple in the water. If I really wanted to I could flood the town, but I happen to like this town, so I think that demonstration will have to do."
"Now, target keys are used to enhance the effects of the action key and make it harder for the target to resist the effects of the spells. However, water is also an elemental target key. Elements are a first class Target Key, so they have their own set of actions that can without the use of any action keys.
For example, one could create rain, create waves within the water, create a whirlpool, or any number of water based effects without the use of a control key. However, the effects are strongest with both a well trained Target key and Action key."
Ok, enough boring chatter, let's see what you all can do. You can all produce basic effects with the keys I've taught you, so let's see what you can do. Spread out a long the river, and give me what you can do with the control and water keys."
----------
Casting requires you to spend AP on spell casting (if you aren't doing anything else you can just use all of your AP, although that makes you vulnerable to attacks and it means you aren't paying any attention to your surroundings while you cast your spell. So you can spend AP on defending or attacking while casting spells, you can leave AP free simply to pay attention to whats going on around you, to move or pretty much anything else.
So just tell me what you are trying to do, how much AP you are using, what focuses you are using, and I determine how successful it is based on the levels of your keys, your focus, the AP you spent, and I tell you how much mp it drains and the effects of the attempted spell.

Cyran stepped on the edge of the riverbed and smiled.
"It's time to show them who's best once more" he though to himself.
He carefully reached into his pocket and took out the air orb his uncle gave him. The orb was a perfect sphere of glass, polished to perfection that was as beautiful as it was powerful. The inside of the orb was hollowed out into a perfect sphere as well. Inside the hollowed out area were visible gusts of magical air currents that circulated within the finely crafted orb.
Cyran held the orb out in front of him. With the power of the orb and his concentration he was determined to lift about three gallons of water approximately ten feet in the air. He focused to attempt to release the drops of water in random intervals back into the river to simulate moderate showers.
---
(Cyran will try to spend 30 AP to accomplish this task)

just to let you know, AP regenerates round by round and it only diminishes in small doses at a time from fatigue. Since you skipped breakfast you'll get worn out faster, but 30AP isn't much to worry about, and it shows that you aren't really concentrating on your spell, especially since you aren't doing anything else at the moment.
AP is kind of like your physical and mental ability to concentrate on different things during a combat round. (like attack and defense, or defending while spell casting, or any number of things. If you spend all of your AP in one go, thats full concentration. It'll regenerate as long as you aren't fatigued, and magical fatigue drains mana long before it drains your AP.
Want to readjust the amount of AP you're spending?

The spell goes off pretty much as you want it too. Looking around, you see a few people who manage a small geyser shot of water, create waves or small showers like you, some people who tried to imitate the reverse wave effect Malfael did earlier and only got a ripple, and the most impressive display besides your own, Derek's whirlpool. However his effect only lasts for about thirty seconds before he's unable to maintain it anymore. He looks exhausted from it.
You make a moderate shower for about three minutes before it begins to tire you out. You can keep going if you want to.

Cyran glanced over at Derek's whirlpool for a brief second, feeling a bit jealous he had not thought of such a unique spell. It would be in his interest to circulate the water Derek was controlling in the opposite direction to cancel his whirlpool effect, but it looked like Derek was exhausted already.
Instead, Cyran decided to take an extra step and try a more difficult task. Grasping the orb again, he attempted to use it to his advantage as he thought to himself "control water."
With this spell, Cyran attempted to alter the river's flow by preventing the water from running through the middle of the river. If he were successful, the river would fork into two smaller streams before reconnecting downstream further.
---
Spend 120 AP by "Controlling Water" and attempting to move the water with the help of the air orb.

Just to confirm, if you spend all 120AP, you'll release the affects of the shower spell. If you split the AP (doesn't have to be equal) between both spells you can maybe keep both going, but you don't know if what you're trying is within your power or not, so you might need as much energy devoted to the splitting as you can.

Without the air orb, you wouldn't have been able to do it. For about ten seconds, the water does what want it too, but than it goes back to normal. Fortunately your uncle takes notice and moves over to you.
"Impressive Cyran. I didn't expect anyone was at that level already, not even you."
Derek shoots a nasty look at you, but perks up when he hears Malfael's next comment
"Derek's whirlpool was also impressive, and Cid's geyser shot nearly twenty feet in the air. We have some talent in this class."
Malfael continues the lessons for awhile longer, but around noon, Malfael stops and says
"My old master, Tiryal will be arriving in town tonight. He will be teaching your class tommorow and he expects you to be there at 7am sharp. He is far more adept than I am, so I expect you all to pay close attention, you can learn some things from him that I could never hope to teach you.
Malfael dismisses the other students for the day. He says to you "I'm going to have dinner with Tiryal tonight, want to come along?"

"Sure. Let's go back to my place."
The two of you walk towards Malfael's home. He lives in a simple but large home about a mile up the river from where you guys practiced.
"That was an impressive feat you did earlier, splitting the river like that. Most of the kids aren't very talented, but there are a couple. Some of them, while they aren't talented might be good mages one day. But you? I think you'll be powerful, maybe more powerful than me one day. How do you like that orb I gave you?"
-----------
Oops, I forgot to say, between the shower spell and the splitting the river, you're down to 30MP left. If you spend more than 90AP, you'll only recover to 90AP. That should go away after you eat. MP will recover some, but not fully after you eat.

"The orb is amazing, I love it. As I promised, I will take good care of it." Cyran reached into his pocket to make sure it was still there.
"Although it is quite secure in my pocket, I'm still worried it can break. Would you happen to have a pouch that closes well and has soft lining on the inside to protect it from harm?" Cyran pleaded once more.

"Sure. The tailor owes me a favor. We'll talk to him after lunch. I'll enchant it for extra protection. That orb is more expensive than I would care to replace, even for my favorite nephew."
You arrive at Malfael's house. It's a big home with a large ceiling. There's a second floor, but its mostly just a loft with Malfael's bed and clothes drawer. The bottom floor is filled with a bunch of books, scrolls and magical items that Malfael likes to tinker with. Its very messy and disorganized at first glance, but there's a method to the madness. Malfael always seems to know where everything is.
"Wait a few minutes, I'll prepare lunch. I've got some a deer meat I bought from a hunter, as well as some cheese and bread. Feel free to look around at some of the books and things I've been toying with, but please don't move anything around."

Cyran nodded and smiled as his uncle began to cook. He was mischievous in many ways, but he loved his uncle dearly for teaching him so much and respected his request.
Cyran looked at the many books strewn about in his uncle's house. He approached a bookshelf where many of his books were kept, in no particular order.
He came across a book that sparked his interest. It was a book titled "A mage's cook book."
"Uncle Malfael? May I take a look at this book here?"

The book Cyran's looking at is supposed to be sort of an 'alchemy' book. One thing I wish I put stats into was a 'combine' key. Perhaps this would settle as a focus that would allow me to do such things with the elements I chose.
Cyran looked at the many books strewn about in his uncle's house. He approached a bookshelf where many of his books were kept, in no particular order.
He came across a book that sparked his interest. It was a book titled "A mage's cook book."
"Uncle Malfael? May I take a look at this book here?"

Malfael looks over and nods. He says "If you want to help me out with some chores and experiments in the evenings, I could give you some lessons in that as well.

A book can be used as a focus, but its not a very practical one.
Sorry for the delay in posting, between Thanksgiving, work, and hanging out with friends and family over the weekend, I haven't felt like posting.

It wasn't in his best interest to do chores, he would have loved to play outside but with the help of the book he picked out, the things he could use with his magic would be nearly limitless and he would be on par when it came to impressing the class, and more importantly, thwarting Derek.
"Well.. alright," Cyran spoke, not entirely enthusiastic. "How long will it take to finish these chores?"

"Just a bit of light cleaning, so not more than half an hour to an hour tops. Besides, you get to help me with some magical experiments and get some additional lessons."
