FFVI Main Character debate

#1

Post by Crazyswordsman » Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:56 am

This was a spawn from the Dissidia topic, where we got into a discussion of who FFVI's main character was.

Here's what I think: I really don't know who FFVI's main character is. However, the main character is not synonymous with the hero. And I think Terra is easily the hero. -CSM

I'm just going to say Terra in the first half, Celes in the second.

or, everyone playable is the main character or something cheesy like that.

The best thing about FF6 is that it doesn't have a defined main protagonist.-jay

From the beginning, to getting my ass kicked playing as Sabin because I cannot Blitz....It's half Terra and half Locke.

Terra all the way. Even in the WoR. The first half of the game revolves around her and the second half is an extension of her story that couldn't be completed if she had been the one you started with. additionally, even without her in the party when Kefka is defeated, she flies to the party's rescue.
Celes is a huge supporting role, giving a different outlook on several of Terra's characterizations (thoughts on magic, Imperial servitude, love). In short, the game is about Terra, but it wouldn't be a complete story without Celes.

It's clearly Terra, there is no debate.

^You should see how all the Celes fanboys on Gamefaqs respond to the much more intelligent based justifications for Terra. People use the Opera scene as justification for Celes, although we Terra defenders say "Why did they go to the Opera House? To get to the Southern Continent (and thus, by extension, save Terra)."

Of course, people also use the fact that Celes starts the WoR as justification, but the only other real characters who could do that other than her were Setzer and Strago because the others had other priorities than finding friends and beating Kefka. And even Setzer and Strago were a stretch. -CSM

Kefka.

I'm not here to debate, either. I quit nerd debates after that debacle about mother****ing Goku.

^^Like I said, Terra is the protagonist, but not the main character. The two terms are not always one in the same. -CSM

this would be a good answer if kefka had any backstory whatsoever.

Kefka has a backstory.

Kind of like how Cyrus from Pokemon has one. You find where he lived. :/

Started playing it today, and lovin' it. I'd say Terra and Locke. But mainly Terra.

No one knows who Goku's mom is.

Locke is the main character. If nothing else, his design is that of the common main character. Terra is a story element, albeit a very large one. But she's really just something to revolve the story around. A main character is defined by actions that actually make the story turn. They mixed it up pretty well but small hints give away Locke as the mian dude. For one, he shows up very early in the game and is required for many story plots within the game, whereas Terra is AWOL for a decent chuck of the game, either knocked out, going nuts or pulling a Gohan and not battling anymore.

^Terra DOES make the story turn. When she's knocked out, the whole point of the game becomes "save Terra!" The story is clearly based around her. -CSM

Dude, Setzer isn't a main character but he does, to some degree, make the story turn as well. If he was knocked out, the only difference in that scene would be a sprite and a word.

Guys, it's obvious Umaro is the main character.

I'm pretty sure there are some actual arguments about Mog being the main character. I have no clue why.

Actually, ????? is the main character. Seriously, the ghost on the train, remember? Yep.

Also, Flying Man from Earthbound stole the show.

Who does Kefka want? Terra. Why is Figaro Castle set on fire? Terra. Who is the only person in the world that uses magic and has a huge advantage when in-battle? Terra.
