Stupid question: Who or what is the Resident Evil?

I do think this is a cool title, but I was just wondering what exactly it was refering to. It would make sort of sense in the first game, since you're dealing with the mansion and its residents (who happen to be evil/misunderstood), but it just doesn't match the rest of the games. Dictionary.com gives this another definition of the word "resident", which seems more fitting: "A physician receiving specialized clinical training in a hospital, usually after completing an internship." Seeing how Umbrella is a pharmaceutic company, that would make some sense, I guess, but it gives the name sort of a corny feel.
On a completely different note, am I the only one to think the original, japanese title "Biohazard" to be somewhat poorly chosen? I mean, evidently the fact that Umbrella's viruses are responsible for the whole mess is no big secret, and it does fit the series as a whole, but the first game's main objective was to figure out what the Hell happened in this mansion. That's probably just me, though. It's not like I'd rather have a spoiler warning in the title of the game, though that'd be rather humorous. Just some random thought.
