Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake could feature new appearance options, replacing male/female titles with "Appearance A" and "Appearance B" instead.

According to a recent rumor, the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2DRemake is doing away with the old male and female titled options, opting for a different system based on appearance. After years of no news, the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake finally got a spotlight shone on the game during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct. It was featured in a brand-new trailer that showed off a number of classic gameplay elements and how they had been re-imagined to fit Team Asano's HD-2D art style. Remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 were also confirmed to be in development, launching in 2025 after Dragon Quest 3's November 2024 release.

The Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has a number of new features, such as new performance modes on PS5 and three difficulty settings for players to try out. Other quality-of-life improvements have been added as well, such as an auto-save, the ability to save anywhere, and adjustable speed settings for movement and battles. There have been a few rumors swirling about this game as well, such as a new report stating that the game will be adjusting how players choose their hero's appearance.

The leak states that there won't be a male or female titled appearance for the hero, but rather an "Appearance A" and "Appearance B" selection. Since the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake also has voice acting, the leak provides who is voicing who, with Appearance A being voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama, and Appearance B being voiced by Yuko Minaguchi. Hiyama previously voiced the Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Dragon Quest Rivals.

Based on this leak, it appears that Square Enix and Team Asano are being more inclusive with these options, similar to how Pokemon games and Splatoon have used more inclusive appearance-based player character selection options. This is seemingly supported by how job classes are no longer going to be distinguished by gender in the name either.

While Dragon Quest 3 allowed players to choose between a male and female hero, the character would always be referred to as "Ortega's son," though the re-releases would change this to be more reflective of the hero's selected gender. The male hero is usually the default and designated hero to represent the game, as seen with his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but the female hero has appeared in other spin-offs like Dragon Quest Rivals. These two will likely now be known in-game as Appearance A and Appearance B, respectively. That said, fans should take this information with a grain of salt until Square Enix officially reveals more information about the remake.

I was interested in this remake because I never played DQ3 before (although I've always disliked Square's "HD-2D" game line's look), so hopefully this rumor isn't true, but knowing Square it probably is. This relatively recent trend of gaming erasing gender is so bizarre, bad, and just unnecessary. Every game now has "Style 1/2", "Type A/B", etc instead of male or female, with some games going as far as to try to avoid gender in dialogue altogether. This is some weird Twilight Zone stuff going on.
