does anyone else miss these? when was the last time you bought one / remember them being sold still where you live?

i think theyfinally disappeared in australia around 2011 or so, but they were mostly long gone by then. the last one i recall that was still being published was called Hyper magazine. it wasnt console specific and covered everything in gaming.

I had subscriptions to EGM and Game Informer until they stopped publishing physical rags. (GI at least had the decency to refund the balance of my scrip, because they still had money, I guess.)

Occasionally I'd buy other titles at the newsstand, like GameFan and NP. It only took me one issue to realise Gamepro sucked and resolve to never buy another one.

...I liked EGM most. Back when I was subscribed, they had Seanbaby doing monthly columns, and 'Hsu and Chan' comics at the back of every issue. Nowadays Seanbaby makes his bread at 1900HotDog, and 'Hsu and Chan' is a quasi-animated series on YouTube (the videos all have less than like 300 views apiece, because the world is a place where the villains wear a smile on their face).

I stopped buying them in the mid-late 90s. I had a bunch of subscriptions. I'm not sure which ones I even subscribed to, but I remember Nintendo Power, EGM, Gamepro, Game Informer, GameFan, Computer and Video Games, and NEXT Generation. I probably subscribed to all of them at some point and maybe some others. so I always had something fresh to read. It was great for the time but terribly antiquated even by late 90s Internet.

I remember Game Informer when it was the old FuncoLand promotional vehicle. I'm sure GameStop didn't want to annoy game buyers by stiffing them out of their subscription money.

I'm not sure about subscriber count over time, but that seems like a reasonable estimate. Some time during that first decade of the 2000s, they were all either dead or on their last legs. It's hard to compete with free and fast. For a monthly gaming magazine, it was still fresh in the 80s and 90s, but eventually it got to a point where it was outdated very quickly. There were still some people who appreciated reading specific people's opinions but not enough for adequate ad or subscription revenue to cover the costs.

I do miss them. They hung on longer than I expected, I was still reading them occasionally via GameStop, Game Informer. That was years ago, probably the better part of a decade.

A few years back I read Walmart's free one they had, but only once. I'm not sure if they even still make them, it was kinda neat but unremarkable. I'd like to see Nintendo Power make a comeback.

Big thing I wouldn't mind returning from NP is the Mario and Zelda comics. Maybe the Nester comics, too.

Hey, remember when Nintendo made a Nester video game, because they're mad as a grass helmet? I almost liked 'Nester's Funky Bowling'------------it was tied with every other Virtual Boy game for the title of "Worst Virtual Boy Game Ever".

Wario VB was pretty good, I only played the demo like...30 years ago, but reviews suggest it's good too. They really missed a good opportunity to bring it to 3DS.

I actually liked Gamepro. Guess I am in the minority?
