Try using his Noiseblaster more, especially if he's teamed up with Sabin - the Aura Bolt doesn't make the enemy stop being confused.

Oh, and if you had gotten the Stray Cat Rage, Gau would be the most powerful right now. He does 800 per hit at this point in the game. =P

....and be sure to take everyone back to their hometowns at least once at some point. Yeah!

The Magitek Factory is basically trial and error. All you have to do is keep going down different conveyor belts - just try to get as far as you can and eventually you'll get where you need to be. If there's anywhere in the game that you'll inadvertently gain some levels, it's this place - which is good, because physical attacks do approximately jack.

Edit: Thanks to the fact that you'll mostly be using magic attacks here, Edgar's Noiseblaster is utterly invaluable. And Cyan's level one sword technique ignores defense so it'll be the most powerful attack in your arsenal outside of a level 2 elemental spell.
