WHAT TO DO IF A NUCLEAR DISASTER IS IMMINENT! (via)
I'm fascinated by survival guides and the like.
Here's the gist: If you see a blinding flash, do not go to the window to find out what happened. A shock wave will come in at least eight seconds, shattering the window. It may sound stupid and cliche, but you will want to duck and cover instead. Afterwards, hunker down in the basement, and try to get as much mass in between you and the outside. Fallout is most radioactive in the first few hours after the blast; waiting it out for 36 hours will greatly increase your chances of survival. Air, water, and food do not become radioactive, so feel free to breathe, drink, and eat.
The guide goes into much more detail.
