How's your space? Cluttered or Tidy and Neat?

Despite what you may have heard, messy people are not degenerate or inferior.

In fact, new research suggests that those who say “yes to the mess” in their homes and offices, rather than being lazy, are actually nurturing our, sorry I mean their, creativity.
Unfortunately though, no one else understands the complex cataloguing system that exists inside a messy person’s head.

Other people spend hours tidying, organising and cleaning but messy people never have to waste time with things like this, and can therefore spend hours being productive (or unproductive, it’s their choice). They also have more time for worthier pursuits, like catching up on an extra hour of sleep, or even getting some work done.

Some of the greatest minds of our time worked in super sloppy offices.

When asked about his messy desk, Einstein reportedly said “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then what are we to think of an empty desk?”
Research conducted by Kathleen Vohs, PhD, of the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, found that cluttered environments help induce greater levels of creativity.

Well then... I'm a creative faerie. What an awesome way to consider my "natural" nature!! :D

I'm more cluttered/messy.

My partner is definitely in the tidy campy though. It's a little infuriating when he "organizes" something and then, a few hours or days later, has no idea where that something is. My stuff might be a little messy, but I know where most everything is.

Mr. UN and I are both cluttered/messy people. Never dirty, just messy.

My space is fairly messy at the moment, though that's mainly because I have a lot of stuff crammed into half of a bedroom.

Messy. My digital space is pretty organized, though.

I don't know what I am. A while ago I started to think I developed a bit of OCD because I suddenly became super organized/cleanly. I wasn't like that until I entered college, so I think living with messy people trigged something in me, because then I started to fully realize how disgustingly messy my parents were and cleaned the house too. Growing up, my parents never told me to clean anything - I actually ended up cleaning for them. My mom's a hoarder and that aggravates me. At the same time, I accumulate messes as I work on projects. If I'm ever messy it's because I'm working on something. Then I clear everything. So I guess that makes me ultimately very normal and thus boring now that I think about it. Most of the times though I apply a general "chaotic order" of things. It may look messy but it's still organized in the sense that "This **** goes here, that **** goes there."

I don't entirely agree with any conclusions about messy or clean people. Steve Jobs was a clean freak and that inspired the style and vision of Apple products - sleek and minimalist. My boss is really messy and his company is failing because he rejects any creative ideas to save it - he actually wastes more time becuase things just get lost in his office.

^To be fair, I think there's a significant difference between being "messy" and "dirty." I'm stuck living with people who leave actual garbage and dirty clothes everywhere, which is a long way from leaving project materials out on a desk.

My second year roommate in college used to leave his toothbrushes lying around in random places - like the windowsill or the inside of a drawer with dirty clothes. It would irritate me to no end, even though it wasn't my toothbrush or anything, just seeing him do that would confound me.

He would also do this thing where he would take a can of soda, not finish it, and then leave it in the fridge for like the next week. He wouldn't finish it. He would just take a new soda, not finish that either, and also leave it in the fridge. Considering I was the one paying for the sodas, that really got to me.

I should stop now before I recall other college roommate unpleasantries.

One of my current ones has left this giant empty box right next to his door since the first day of the semester. He actually fell over it about a week ago and still hasn't bothered to move it nor any of the other boxes that have accumulated there.

The recycling room is literally three feet outside our room, for the record. He walks right past it several times every day. >_>
