Are you allergic to any foods? Do your family and friends always accommodate you?

Here in DownUnder, we have the Food Allergy Week happening. This is of interest to me as I have food allergies. Every single day, I need to know exactly what I am eating. Unfortunately, I had a scare only a few weeks ago. I was very distracted and a lovely lady offered me a biscuit... I took it, ate it, and then when I went over to thank her again, she informed me it contained peanuts. The allergic reaction started within minutes. O_o Long story short... no hospital trip but medication, an afternoon of discomfit and two days recuperating.

The statistics are that 1 in 10 babies born will develop a food allergy... hence the one nail painted. If you would like to do that to help raise awareness, that'd be great!!

If you'd like to do more, try the challenge...
Adopt an allergy
As part of food allergy awareness week Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia are encouraging people to pick a food allergy and avoid that food for the entire week to discover how hard it is to live with food allergies.
Or even just a day or two.

People can be allergic to any food. In fact, there are 170 different foods that are known to cause anaphylaxis (a severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction).

The nine most common food allergies are; egg, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, cow’s milk, sesame, peanuts and tree nuts.

I'll do my bit and not eat peanuts. Ever again. :D

I don't have any food allergies per se, but I avoid tons of food. My dad had a number of them though, and I thought I was lucky not to inherit them. Turns out I can't eat some of the stuff anyway.

Living in New Orleans, and specifically near a street with tons of businesses on it, I am constantly reminded of food allergies. Not because anyone I know has a food allergy (Does Celiac Disease count?) But because we have such a variety of restaurants they usually have a warning about it someone on their menu or walls.

It always helps to be aware though.

I have no diagnosed food allergies, but certain nuts (especially pistachios) cause my throat to burn. Fortunately, I don't like nuts anyway & already avoided them for that reason before I started noticing my physical reaction.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I don't have any food allergies, unless we're talking Asia.

I'm allergic to shrimp (but not other shellfish oddly).

Thankfully, shrimp is much more avoidable than something like wheat or nuts.

My dad's allergic to some things. I only inherited the weird ones (juniper and alfalfa sprouts..no gin and tonics for me please!!). We're still not sure where this whole fish thing came from...

Also, Tazy: It only counts if you actually have the syndrome ;)

I'm intolerant to mustard, triggers nausea just to smell. Don't think that counts as an allergy as such, but it's the closest I've got. Dunno what else I am made physically ill by, not including flavors which turn my stomach.

Yikes! Well, I can do sushi, but it's a gamble unless I'm told what's fish and what's not. Although it at least doesn't trigger any anaphalaptic reaction. Just digestive distress. Usually not worth it. Unless I'm really craving sushi.

Dairy makes me ill, and I have issues with some meats (there's something about rib-meat in general that I can't stomach. It isn't always, but it's often enough I feel safest avoiding them altogether; actually, pork in general makes me sick, come to that) (you know, maybe it's okay---------like, I don't care much about cows, deer or fowl, but I like piggies. They're tough and smart and omnivorous--------like people. Seems just a quirk of fate that dogs ended up man's best friend instead of pigs, come right to it.)
