Weird how simple things can seem more complicated than they are. Logically I shouldn't need advice for this but oh well.

I used to know this girl few years ago. She doesn't live in the state anymore but I have her on Facebook. Since she moved we hardly talk at all. I haven't had a cell for a long time until recently but so I'm thinking about asking her for her number or giving her mine so we can text. She told me before she wanted to but I couldn't then.

Anyway, that's the gist of it. I guess just ask her? It's not like I'm really trying to "get with" her or anything, but women seem to jump to that conclusion and I'd rather not give that impression so I'm thinking twice about it.

Well that's that. Advice?

Message her with something along the lines of, "Hey, I've realised how long it's been since we've chatted, and miss catching up with you since you've moved. You asked me about keeping in contact through text, and I finally have a cell phone, maybe we could message sometimes like you suggested? Here's my number. Send me a text and let me know how you've been." Then ask something specific to her - if you know someone in her family, or a pet, or even the place she's moved to/job/school, ask how they are, or how the place is, something which prompts a response. And feel free to let her know if you are unlikely to reply on Facebook ("If you message back here on FB, let me apologise in advance if I take forever to reply, I don't visit often," or whatever reality is for you).
