I'm so ****ing tired of watching videos of The Who or anything from the 60's-70's and seeing people talk about their music as if they experienced some magical golden age (which they did, in a sense, don't get me wrong). There's no 'best' generation in the world of music; all across the span of time we've had what each generation considers good music and to this very day we have exactly that. I agree that pop radio is horrendous, but most everything I listen to comes from 1990 and beyond. If I can have an iPod full of recent music which I, as a musician, find musically sound and creative, then there's no reason to bash a generation full of musicians with just as much talent as any budding band from the 60's just because they weren't around in that era or just because you're too lazy to look past the surface of modern music and find something you like. The Beatles were great, the Stones were great, and all of that was great, but face it, it's time to either stick to your old guns or move on. They aren't coming back.

By the by, the title of this thread can also apply to people who blindly hate music that came out before they were born.

I personally try not to classify music by the so called "eras".

I prefer to just classify it by type and quality.

I'm one of those people who can listen to any kind of music just so long as I find it entertaining.

Classic Rock Elitists aren't as bad as Indie Elitists.

There are actually people who stop listening to their favorite band just because they are more popular.

My mom basically hates all rap for whatever reason. She also hates most new R&B if the singer isn't originally from when she was growing up.

I do tend to have a liking toward 90's music. Ironically most of the 90's music I like nowadays is stuff I never heard growing up.

My favorite year in music was the year I was born.

But it's impossible not to like '94. Phenomenal year.

If I remember rightly, most music that's forced on us via radio play tends to be on the "bad" end of the scale, no matter what year. There's always something good, and something horrible. The radio stations are paid to play more of the latter- it's not actually popular music.

It's because record labels think they know what the public likes. So they force the public to like it.

Mainstream music's been on a downswing since the mid-90s. There hasn't really been a new break in any styles, and most of it is just rehashed crap. Mainstream Rap's been terrible for almost a decade now and lost any sense of direction it had in terms of a message in the 80s and early 90s. Rock's been pretty much destroyed to the point where one has to question the actual talent level. Distortion is used wrong, synths are used wrong, and people are taking the most obnoxious and unlikable parts of the 80s and 70s and trying to repackage it. Also, the little focus on postpunk hardcore from the 80s mixed with melodic early emo/alt rock is just terrible to listen to. You haven't really seen a solid "scene" movement since grunge and post-grunge in the early 90s, and most rock (be it alt-rock, nu metal, metal, or whatever other subgenre you want to throw out there) just sounds like imitations of something I've heard 10 years ago.

The last great year for rap was 1996, although 2001 wasn't too shabby.

People that say this haven't listened the the entire discography. The Stones have some essential dead points and the Beatles are IMO about 70% poppy garbage. The 30% of the Beatles discography that isn't poppy garbage is excellent and highly influential, but holy hell most of the catalog is about as relevant as a Backstreet Boys B-side and Rarity album.

The Stones aren't as bad, but its a different type of music and far more Blues/Folk influenced. Its sort of like looking at the history of 'metal' and looking at the split between Motorhead and Black Sabbath influences (where one is closer to proto-punk and the other is close to Blues)

When OutKast (or any members of the Dungeon Family) releases an album, it is officially at least a decent year.
