What does attack area do?

Is there any gameplay difference in attacking the head, torso, arms, or legs? Some monsters don't even have all of those appendages, yet you can still target those parts! My only guess here is the ratio of accuracy to damage dealt.

Apparently, some enemies have some special attributes when attacking certain parts. Like, that stupid fiddler krab who scanned weak vs. attacks to its arms, but actually gained defense when you attacked his arms.

Or those ManOwars which gain defense (and take no damage) if you attack their heads or legs.

They sound really annoying.
