Source: The Hollywood ReporterMay 25, 2004 — The head of DreamWorks animation, Ann Daly, confirmed earlier rumors that two more Shrek films will be developed:
"It wasn't really advisable to start working on three and four until we knew that we actually had something in two, and certainly this weekend confirmed that we do," she said.
Daly told The Hollywood Reporter that studio is currently in final negotiations for all the original cast to return.

Source: Dark HorizonsJune 1, 2004 — Dark Horizons has received this unconfirmed scoop on what to expect from Shrek 3:
"Screenwriter Jon Zack ("Out Cold", "Perfect Score") has apparently landed the job of writing Shrek 3. Shrek and Fiona are King and Queen now and they hate it so Fiona tries to get friend Arty (aka. King Arthur) to do so but he's still in college. From what he tells me Arthur, Gwenivere and Lancelot are supposed to be portrayed as a couple of jocks and a cheerleader and they have to find the holy grail for some rather odd reason"

Source: VarietyJanuary 23, 2004 — Shrek, who has hasn't even returned to theaters in "Shrek 2", will be coming back in a third movie about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, according to Variety.
The first order of business appears to be hiring a second set of writers to work with "Shrek 2" scribes David Stem, Joe Stillman and David N. Weiss in order to push the franchise into trilogy territory.
"Shrek 3" is not the only animated sequel project getting a push at DreamWorks. The studio is also at work on "Shark Tale 2," even though the first film won't bow until October.
Animated pics require more advance planning than regular feature films because of the painstaking process of bringing characters to life (toons usually take at least two years to produce). But it is nonetheless a gamble for the studio to be jump-starting a sequel project before the returns are in on its predecessor -- especially when the films are not being made on paltry budgets.
DreamWorks is hungry for franchises, however. The upcoming "Ring 2" is the first live-action followup the mini-major has managed.
