Hello, friend.
Well, so. If your computer rig is in a place you can keep pets out of, I'd recommend D-Con. It's an excellent mouse/rat poison------------essentially turns the animals' guts into a gel after it kills them, so you don't have to worry about the smell of rot if they die in your walls.
If pets are going to be an issue, I've heard that wiping your chewable components with mint, chili and/or lime will repel animals. Strong scents in general are useful (mice and rats have sensitive noses------------we used mothballs as an all-purpose animal repellant at my old scout camp). Just be careful about what you choose; some seemingly innocuous things might be dangerous to pets (e.g. lavender is toxic to cats).
Best of luck, friend.
