Former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane, his wife, Karin, and their two daughters, Rachel and Connie, are in heavy Philadelphia traffic when the city is overrun by zombies; Gerry discovers it takes 12 seconds for an infection to complete. As chaos spreads, the Lanes escape to Newark and take refuge in an apartment with a couple and their young son, Tommy. They are rescued by a helicopter sent by U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Thierry Umutoni, and bring Tommy with them after his parents were both infected due to their refusal to accompany them. The group is brought to a U.S. Navy vessel in the Atlantic Ocean, where scientists and military personnel are analyzing the outbreak. Andrew Fassbach, a virologist, insists the plague is a virus and the development of a vaccine depends on finding its origin, and Gerry, after his family are threatened with eviction from the safety of the vessel, agrees to help Fassbach in his search.

Gerry, Fassbach, and a Navy SEAL escort first fly to Camp Humphreys in South Korea where the first report of zombies occurred. Upon landing they are attacked by zombies causing Fassbach to panic and accidentally kill himself when he trips over and accidentally shoots himself in the head with his own gun. American soldiers at the camp rescue the team, and Gerry learns the infection was introduced to the base by its doctor. Gerry interviews an imprisoned CIA officer at the base who tells him to go to Israel, revealing Israeli Mossad were able to learn about the virus before the outbreak occurred and managed to build a safe zone. Karin attempts to contact Gerry by phone and the group is attacked by zombies attracted by the ringing, while only Gerry and the pilot escape.

I never saw 'World War Z', but I read the book. The book was terrific-----------it was an outgrowth of the author's older book 'Zombie Survival Guide', which was fun.

[EDIT: The book of 'World War Z' is presented as a series of interviews by the author of Z-Apocalypse survivors from all walks of life throughout the world-----‐---couple of the interviewees take potshots at 'The Zombie Survival Guide' for being America-centric (e.g. presupposing the ready availability of guns and relative ease of getting out of urban areas). It was kind of a nice touch. Self-deprecating (possibly Brooks heard those very criticisms about the book IRL).

It's one of the better zombie films, as I recall, though I only saw it once and don't remember much. I wouldn't mind rewatching it actually.

I'm generally not a fan of fast zombies, and I always thought the image of the zombies crawling all over each other, making huge piles of themselves like army ants, looked totally ridiculous. It reminds me of that 'Futurama' episode where the robots lift each other up onto their shoulders faster than the Planet Express ship can get away---------that also is ridiculous, but at least 'Futurama' is a flippin comedy.

[EDIT: I bring it up because the zedheads in the book of 'World War Z' are slow-movers. An inexorable horde of slow-movers is every bit as scary as an inexorable horde of fast-movers, and it looks a great deal less stupid.]

^ I typically agree, unless it's not the traditional zombie type. It worked for the 28 Days Later series pretty well.

Yeah, of course. Rage 'zombies' from '28 Days Later' aren't actual zomblers, they're living people who've gone completely bonkers as a result of the virus. I can see an absolute lunatic retaining fast bipedal movement.

...actual walking corpse zimbies though. True zambambos. Zutaagon. I mean, I would assume rigor would set in at some point. And, like, the stuff in the inner ear that allows us to balance ourselves, that would congeal, right? I'd think zombles would have trouble walking, let alone sprinting.

I'd think outside of the cold they'd fall apart pretty quickly too, TWD showing them still meaty after years of shambling was tough to swallow.

^Ooh, imagine zombies getting attacked by carrion crows, and then the crows get the Z-virus and turn, and then, in addition to the zombies, you have to worry about actual murders of undead murder-crows dive-bombing you from above. Yipes stripes. That'd be scary as all get-out.

A zombified version of The Birds does sound kind of badass, in a Sharknado sort of way.

Call it, "The Birdz". Get it? The "s" is dropped for a "z", like in zombies. I'll take my check now, thanks.

Zombies are played out. I wanna see a movie about an attack by space Orks, straight out of Warhammer 40K. With the Orks as protagonists. That'd be a fun flick. "Waaaagh! Eat dakka, ya puny humie gitz!" Man. It doesn't exist, and it never will, but I'm still hyped at how rad it'd be.
