Fights come in five difficulties (very easy, easy, challenging, hard, very hard) You can either fight for a cash prize or for any piece of equipment.

[strike]All in[/strike] Very hard as long as I don't have to bet any money.

No you don't.

The cash prize for a very hard fight at your rank is 1000gp.

Blake
HP: 100/100
MP: 25/25

vs

Masked Soldier
HP: 180/180
MP: 0/0

Your opponent for the fight is a masked soldier wielding a spear and in heavy armor. You begin at Short range. Remember you get two actions per turn. Reactions (which I'm changing to Defenses to avoid confusion) must be declared as one of them if you want to use them. You need to move as one of your actions in order to close into melee range, since he can attack you from short range. All fights start at short range (except some in missions or exploration). Just to let you know, whenever an enemy prepares a defense, I won't be telling you what that is.

Masked Soldier steps back to Medium range and enters into a defensive stance.

Can I defend with my buckler to increase the chance it'll block a ranged, or throw attack in this case?

The base use of the shield is automatic. If you wanted to use the block skill to improve your normal defenses, than that takes an action.

Since its your first fight and this is a bit different, I'll give you some hints. I said you can use two actions per turn. You can use the same action twice.

Oh and yes you can throw your axe if you wanted to, but than you'll be unarmed and would have to move into his attack range or past him (if you missed) in order to retrieve it.

Just for clarification, the hand axe says it is melee and short range, but your post with the masked warrior says I need to get into melee range. Is the axe supposed to only be melee range?

If axe can attack short range, then I will use two parries where I am.

If axe must be melee I will move into melee range.

Sorry I didn't make it clear.

The Hand axe is primarily a melee weapon, but its throwable. It actually can go into medium range, but that was kind of a screw up on my part.

Since its currently your primary weapon and your fighting a guy with a spear, its a very bad idea to throw it.

Well I have no choice but to move within melee range it seems so I shall do that.

Blake attacks.
Masked Soldier attempts to Evade.
Blake hits.
Blake deals 35 damage.

Blake prepares to Parry.
Masked Soldier attacks.
Masked Soldier hits, but blake parries the attack.
Masked Soldier deals 36 damage

(I know the two action thing is kind of unusual, and I apparently haven't been too clear with explaining things so far, so consider this a sort of tutorial battle (albeit a very difficult one). The parry lowers the defense for the next action you have, not the whole turn, so take advantage of that first

HP: 19/100
MP: 25/25

vs

Masked Soldier
HP: 145/180
MP: 0/0

Err... You have no healing items. This is going to be your loss any way you look at it. Want to try a fight at a lower difficulty level or finish this one first?

Well I'm curious about how much damage I'll deal with parry so I'll attack two more times even though we all know it spells certain doom for me.

Masked Soldier dodges.

Masked Soldier attacks.
Hit!
Blake is defeated.

As you level up the abilities, they become much more effective. A completely mastered parry skill will allow you to avoid pretty much all damage, but it takes a lot more experience to level skills up than to buy them.

Want to try another fight at a lower difficulty? Just FYI, if you're going to try a hard or very hard fight, its generally a good idea to carry healing items or have some manner of healing yourself.

Yeah I'll take a normal challenge for now. Once I get some better stats I may try another harder challenge.
