You were told to come to Xanton, a town on the Glass River, which separates Ezkrut from Chandury. A fair amount of trade comes through the town, making it prosperous, but much of the population is military personnel. Unsurprisingly, this means mostly defensive magicians and healers. There's some commotion around the town, but you don't know what it's all about. There also seem to be a lot more people than one would expect in a town this size. You're supposed to report into the Outpost here, where official matters are handled. However, you have some time yet before you report in. You can explore the town, buy equipment, whatever.

a) Report in (Story Mode)
b) Look around town (Shops, Armory, etc.)

You could... dance.

You find the Outpost without much difficulty, as it's the largest building in town. It's a large, stout wooden building of three or four stories. You approach the sole guard, a robed young man with an air of confidence.

Man: Halt. Who goes there?
Sheba: My name is Sheba Cybrin, I'm here on special assignment.
Man: Ah, miss Cybrin. They're expecting you upstairs, second floor, the doorway to your right. Proceed.

He stands aside and opens the door for you. You enter, head up the spiral staircase, and go into the doorway on your right. The only person here at present is a dark-skinned man in black robes, sitting at a desk on your left. He's rolling up a scroll at the moment, but looks up at you shortly.

Man: And you'd be Sheba?
Sheba: Yes, sir.
Man: Excellent, right on time, that's a good girl. I'm Odsbei. You're quite the young Diviner, I hear. So we're going to send you up the river a bit to Azier. It's a little smaller than Xanton. See, some excellent scrying from the capital tells us that the Chands are mobilizing just across the river from that town. We sent up a few reinforcements, but you have to go up there and do some close-up divining. Find out whether the Chands are going to move there or elsewhere. If they're moving on Azier, find whether our defenses there are adequate for their force-- if they aren't, let me know what you need and we'll send backup-- and help defend the place when they attack. If they aren't moving on Azier, find where they are moving and let us know. Give us as detailed a report as you can... numbers, troop types, any important leaders they may have commanding the troops, the time and place they're going to attack, the works. Get as much as you can.

MISSION: Scout out the Chandurians mobilizing near Azier!

Odsbei: Now, unless you've got any questions... hey! Fara!
Voice (from downstairs): Yeah?
Odsbei: You're on duty, get up here and teleport this girl! Quit slacking off down there!
Fara: Fine, fine.

A pretty woman in her mid-twenties hustles up the stairs and hastily salutes to both of you.

Odsbei: Fara, Sheba, Sheba, Fara. She's going to Azier.
Fara: Alright. Do you want me to teleport you now, or is there something else you want to do first?

Fara: Alright. Here goes. Could you step into that circle? It's easier that way if I have nobody to help me, plus it's kinda standard for 'porting between towns.

You step into the white painted circle she has indicated, and she begins a low chant. After a short time, you hear a sharp whoosh. You find yourself in the same circle as before, only now your surroundings are a bit different. There are four people in the room now. Two of them, both red-robed males, are standing about the teleportation circle, chatting idly. There is another, a very tall blonde woman in orange robes, at a desk smaller than Odsbei's, and a fourth, a short black-robed man, talking to the woman behind the desk. One of the teleporters stops talking and greets you.

Teleporter: Hi there. We were told to expect one Sheba. That's you, correct?
Sheba: Yes, that's me.
Teleporter: Okay, great. I guess you're new to Azier. I'm Bert, this is Ian. The woman there is Risali, and that little man is Zalar.

The woman at the desk abruptly stands up and walks over to you, leaving Zalar rather flustered.

Risali: Hello, Sheba. I'm told our town here may be in a bit of danger, and here they send you, just a Diviner. What exactly was your mission?
Sheba: Odsbei said there was a force of Chandurians across the river, and they may be mobilizing to attack us. I'm to gather as much information as I can about their intentions, and then if necessary help to defend any towns they attack.
Risali: ...I see. Most of our resources are committed at this point, and you're a special assignment, so I suppose I can trust your talent. Very well. If you have need, I can reassign a few of these ruffians to serve under you. I'm guessing you may want a Pickpocket or a fellow Diviner, but we can accommodate anything you'd like. However, I doubt we can give you more than one or two of any individual style. There are some free small boats at the dock we keep for military use, you can just grab one and head up, down, or across the river, as you wish. Although you will need to sign for them, as people otherwise tend not to return 'em. Hm... unless there's anything else... get to it. Oh-- you don't even have any writing materials. It'll be hard to prepare a report without those. Here, 30 gold, go and buy some at the general store. Now, then... get to it.

She returns to her desk and you can hear her faintly musing.

Risali: Special assignment... all talent and no sense...

Zalar resumes his conversation with her, and the two teleporters also begin to chat again, only this time they're also eyeing you a bit. There's a stairway down to the first floor, just like in Xanton. What do you want to do?

You decide to head back to the Outpost before going to the dock. You go in the door and walk up the switchback (not spiral, this time-- the building is a little broader) staircase to the second floor. You enter and find the same people there as before, minus the short man in the black robes. Risali is scanning some heavily marked-up maps at her desk. She peers up as you approach.

Risali: Hm? Sheba? What's your need?
Sheba: I was looking to get some people to help me out.
Risali: Alright then. What kind of help were you looking for? I can check the roster and see who's available at the moment, if you want, but as I said before it wouldn't be a problem to reassign a couple people to better suit your needs. After all, this mission's probably more important than whatever they're doing... all the same, we can't neglect too many of our regular duties. So, what do you want to do?

Risali: Alright then. Let me check who's downstairs.

Instead of getting up and checking, she just closes her eyes for a couple of seconds. She turns her head to either side before opening them. You assume she's scrying.

Risali: Ah. Riz is around, but you might not want to go anywhere with Riz. He's a bother-- however, he is quite skilled. There's also Jayra, who's new around here. I don't know much about her, but she seems like a good enough sort. Riz is probably more reliable, but... I wouldn't go with him, personally. Just head downstairs and say that Risali's got a new job for whichever one you choose. Riz has got a brown cloak and a green headband on, Jayra's got a sand-colored cloak and a dark gray bandana.

You approach Jayra, who seems to be looking around nervously.

Sheba: Hi there. You're Jayra?
Jayra: Um... yes...
Sheba: I'm Sheba, nice to meet you.
Jayra: Yeah... you too...
Sheba: So... I need a Pickpocket to help me out on a mission. Are you able to come?
Jayra: Me? You're... you don't want Riz? He's better... everyone says so...
Sheba: I'm sure. So, come on.
Jayra: Al-- alright...

She gets up and heads for the door.

Now what?

You head down to the docks, sign out a boat, and pick one out. It's just a tiny skiff, but it seems simple enough to sail. There's a small mast and sail on board, but you'd have to lash it together and raise it before sailing-- otherwise you can just row. You suppose that the raiseable mast is for purposes of stealth, since you can easier avoid detection if it's down. Jayra, silent the whole time, suddenly pipes up.

Jayra: Oh... I do know how to sail, a little bit... so I can help you if you want.
Sheba: Sure, thanks.
Jayra: Just get in, I'll take care of it.

You climb down into the boat while she unties it from the dock. She hops in with a grace that belies her shyness and pushes the boat off. You're out in the water. There are four paddles on board. She grabs one, you grab the other, and you paddle out a little.

Jayra: So... where are we going?

Apparently theres some sort of Chandurian base along side the river. Wasn't given an exactly location though. Just keep going down the river, I'll look out for them.
