He thinks for a little and then looks at you in a different light.

Lookout: Are you looking to join us?

The lookout sizes you up and shrugs.

Lookout: Alright, whatever. Go talk to him. He's the one with the red cuirass (the piece of armor that goes on your torso) on.

You glance over and quickly spot him. You walk over and address him.

You: Hi. I'd like to join your mercenary band.
Byrgeld: Hmm... okay, what's your name?

Tell him what?

Byrgeld: Chronic, eh? Got it. Now go gather some firewood. We've got a couple others out doing it too. Ye're gonna work as well as fight... we're not lookin' fer employment at the moment though. Rovin' the land and raiding. That's the life... aye. Well-- don't just stand there, get moving!

Do what? You're in a clearing within a boreal forest, there's plenty of wood around, though not much of it is dry.

Okay. You get the firewood and bring it back. Some mercenary tells you to help build the fire. You do so. Rations of deer meat and some sordid water are passed around. You all eat, the others laughing and joking, you mostly keeping to yourself. The food could be worse, you suppose, but not much. After that, you're informed that you get the graveyard shift-- second watch, from midnight to a couple hours before dawn, with somebody named Vunz. You don't know what else to do, so you bed down on the cold, hard ground, no blanket, no pillow... the life of a raider's not easy, it seems.

You're shaken awake a few hours later by somebody. A little jittery, you get up. The other person goes to sleep. Vunz is several yards away, minding his own business. Keeping watch is not exciting. He's a bit wary of you, however.

You keep watch. It's long and boring, and you're cold, but you manage to remain awake for four hours. Vunz tells you the shift's over, shakes awake two other people, and you both go to sleep.

The next morning you all break your fast on some hard bread and the last of the leftover venison. Byrgeld gathers everyone and tells them the plan for the day. You're all to wait in ambush by the side of a certain road. He's pretty sure a specific group of people will be coming by, but if not them, others almost certainly will. It sounds good to everybody else, but you guess that everything Byrgeld says sounds good to this lot.

Wanna do anything first or just go?

You go to the spot. It's a shady wooded area, a pretty obvious ambush spot, but also an effective one. Byrgeld directs everybody to their places, putting you in the front near the road, same side as him and three others.

You all wait for a while before hearing horses somewhere up the road. The light layer of snow on the ground obscured the noise for a while, so they're already within sight. Everybody's poised to strike. You see about six people in the small caravan as it approaches, a pair of unarmed women riding in a wagon pulled by the two horses and four armed men, two of whom are in the carriage as well, the other two of whom are flanking the vehicle.

Continue with the ambush plan or do something else?

The ambush goes smoothly. However, the men draw swords and axes and begin to put up quite a fight. It becomes somewhat chaotic. Do what?

a) Fight alongside the mercenaries
b) Fight alongside the travelers
c) Run away
d) Pretend to fight with the mercenaries and try to "accidentally" kill Byrgeld
e) Try to stealthily kill Byrgeld and go hide while no one's looking
f) Something else

Sure you wanna do a normal attack? He's the toughest of them-- you can do a normal attack if you want to, but I'd use a skill.
