I'll attack the old man and try to take him out.

Marth: The young man rushes at Kagami, stick in hand. You step in to defend him.

You put your ring to the old man's heart. Instead of the onrush of power you expected, you hear a voice running through your mind, so fast that you can't think before the message ends:

I am Ilkorai, God of Mercy. I sensed your good heart, and that of your companion, though your actions belie it. The one near you kills at a glance. As is my nature, I would send you and your dead companion to relative safety, though even I cannot let you out of the Penance. Your companion's soul is still with him-- I can use that to restore life to his body. However, the soul he captured must be let go. Do you wish to fight this man near you? Say yes if you will; say no if you would be granted the safety of the hills, however temporary it is.

Kagami: Yes!

For a brief moment, you see confusion registering on the young man's face. Then there is an instantaneous, soundless shift of surroundings. You blink a few times and shake your head. Once you regain your composure, you peer around yourself. You are in a valley at the bottom of a knoll scattered with patches of dead brown grass. Behind you, ahead of you, and to each side lay similar hills. Onus is lying beside you.

Onus: The first thing you feel is a sense of emptiness. Some new part of your mind that you'd barely had time to grow used to has left. Then you feel warmth and relief flooding through your body, as well as the knowledge that you've been granted a second chance. Someone has shown you mercy. You look around and find the same surroundings as Kagami does. Your companion is crouched beside you.

What do you want to do?

On second glance, you notice a dark opening in one of the nearby hills. There are traces of passage leading into it, as well as the top of one hill to the top of another. The traces start downward, but the hill obscures the rest of them.

You also spot something glinting in the grass a few yards from where you're standing. Do what?

Kagami: It's a short knife. Not a fancy one, and the edge is pretty dull, but the point is still fairly sharp, and the whole blade is rust-free. The haft is simple maplewood. There are faint patches of dried blood running down the whole thing.

Onus: The opening is clearly an entrance into a cave, as you can tell from the light drafts blowing by. You're not sure how deep it is, but you can't see the far end, and it's broad daylight.

What do you want to do?

Alright. You pick it up but decide to hold onto your stick. You walk over to Onus and peer in. You make about the same observations as he does.

Kagami: You walk in, and your eyes begin to adjust, and you see the far wall, a good hundred and fifty yards in, at least. You spot something lying on the ground there as well, but you can't make out any details from this distance.
