If a bear every charges you, always run downhill and never uphill. Bears have great difficulty in moving at a fast pace downhill (especially if the slope is steep) because their front legs are longer than their back legs. The reverse is true for moving uphill or on a flat area, where bears can easily run at fast speeds and outrun any human.

Not that we have charging bears, but I was not aware of this...

Important question: What do you do if the bear is already downhill from you?
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

More importantly, what if the bear is already downhill from you and it's a Care Bear and it does a Care Bear Stare on you?

We don't much have bears in Houston. Don't much have downhill in Houston either, really.
Interesting, though. I'll remember that if I'm ever enjoying the wilderness while on vacation.

Run downhill diagonally away from it I guess?

You could scare away bears by yelling as well, and raising your arms in the air.
Another thing is that while you have sleeping bears loud noises like a pop gun could get them out as well.
Beyond that hanging your food up high might be advised.
Bears are non-violent. The problem is that with animals and respect bears should not be allowed to taste human flesh at all.
Bears are also attracted to strong smells. When you see a bear reaching for a nest of bees it is not the honey they want but the larvae of the bees.
A man invented a Bear-suit ( a body armor that is heavy ) to be able to walk up to bears and not be bitten. Same idea with Lions biting unreadable objects and leaving it alone afterwards.
People have and kept trained bears. Yes there are trained bears.
