We didn't have to memorize the whole thing in school, but we had to learn what the periods & groups meant & know how to reference information on it quickly.
I know a lot of the chemical symbols, but nowhere near all of them. I especially don't know the last row very well, since a lot of those were only named (or even discovered!) in the past 15-20 years.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
