I need help planting trees...

One of my neighbors gave me a pear right? I planted in the ground, and it started to sprout. But a coupld days later its still on the second stage of growing. Did it stop growning? Out of 3 pears I planted, none of them grew in to their full tree. What am I doing wrong?
