This can go two ways.
1.The game sucks.
2.The game sucks so hard nobody even wants to remember it in a few years.
I imagine no good coming out of this game whatsoever.
The biggest problem with Sonic games now is that when you get right down to it, they're all exactly the same.

How dare you talk about Sonic Adventure! That game was awesome and so was Shadow the Hedgehog. Have you even played them? Anyways, you guys are getting worried that it'll be crap when you know nothing about the game including it's name of the game! OMG Sonic has a sword it's gonna be crap like srsly.
What sets sonic games apart from the other series of games is that this game has very good continuity, the personalities are very well developed (much better than mario's), it's more exciting, the lands are always well developed, the music tracks they use for the games are amazing, and there are many other things such as working on a character's past. Look at the mario series, we know nothing about the background of the characters in the mario universe such as "Why does mario where a plumber's outfit? I haven't seen him fix one pipe" or "If peach is a princess, where are the king and queen?".

Shadow the Hedgehog was fun to play in Expert Mode. The story made me want to bang my head against the walls.
What is this thing you call continuity, WvW? In one game, Shadow's dead... in another he's back but has no memories... in a third he is alive like nothing happened and Chaos comes back to life like nothing happened..
And these are all supposed to be games which happen canonically near one another!
Not to mention Shadow the Hedgehog refutes key points of SA2, mostly portraying the Professor in a positive light and retconning half of the plot...
Then we have games like Sonic and the Secret Rings, which don't even follow any canon, and Sonic 06, which if it really happened, Silver's gifting of the blue emerald would have prevented all of the Sonic series from ever happening!
By comparison, every game in the Zelda series has continuity.
Then there's the personalities. We have Tails originally becoming more independent, then suddenly he's a tag-along behind Sonic again? Amy never stops being a psychotic fangirl, and in the meantime, Shadow degrades from a conflicting dark character to a wacky insane John Wayne-style gunman! This doesn't even include Eggman going from menacing to joker, and Gerald's personality not being allowed to stay 'evil'... and Black doom, who might as well have been made of cardboard. All he thought was 'Take over the world and destroy everybody!'
We don't know the background of everything in the Mario universe because that allows for it to remain more sane. It is due to the story you praise which the relatively easy to maintain Sonic series has... crashed into the ground, so to speak.

For the record, we have seen the Mario Brothers working on pipes in at least 2 games.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Too many people are dead set on having Sonic as only being a 2D sidescroller with only the title character playable in it.
Judge the game on its merits, people, not on some expectation of how a game with Sonic in it should be.
