To me it seems very strange indeed. Did Sonic dye his fur blue or something? Does anyone know why hes blue?

Blue has a higher frequency/shorter wavelength compared to other colours, thus having more energy. As such, things which are blue imply a more energetic body, while things which are red are less energetic.

Ace Mercury has the best explanation(and most realistic) so far. None the less, Blue is the usual opposition of Red, so the color does match rival-wise, but as for the fact, there is no real explanation.
