Could it Happen?
Should it Happen?
And I'm not talking "Spiritual Sequel" I mean a Super Mario RPG 2.
With Geno and Mallow and the rest.

Damn, I saw the title and thought they were making one. Then I opened the thread and was sad.
Anywho, it'd be pretty damn sweet if Nintendo and Square teamed up for a sequel, and they did it right. I think it'd be every fanboy's wet dream.

Let's be honest.
Unless Nintendo and Square are able to sit down and create a Mario RPG that matches the hype that has built around the first, there is going to be somekind of backlash from the Fans of it.
And since we've all decided that SMRPG is the best RPG ever, I doubt that.
Nevermind that Nintendo decided to hand Square characters that they'll never use.

I'd think Squeenidos would rather wring some more money out of FF7 than SMRPG. As great as SMRPG is, it doesn't have the mindshare that FF7 does.

On of the biggest problems is Square and Nintendo have not had the best relatonship since back during the SNES days, and everyone knows there was a argument between the two companies with SMRPG was released, because Nintendo said Square did a horrible job and that Mario was not what they had planned on, and it didn't feel like a Mario game. So that started a bad blood between the two companies over this particular game.
The chances of a sequal seems pretty slim really after that.

it did happen. 6 times in fact.
(smrpg was boring in comparison to the others, i don't want final fantasy:mario edition 2!)

In any regard, SMRPG is owned by both Nintendo and Square I think, and I think Square has personally evolved beyond wanting to use other franchises for their hits, they have their own franchises to worry about. Anything in the same style as SMRPG sounds like a step back for them, and I seriously don't think Mario could survive the same level they are giving games like FFX-FFXIII, I think the moment has passed, and I'd expect both companies would be fine with that. Nintendo never liked their franchise being made into a turn-based RPG and I don't think Square would want to retro-create a new game for the company at this point anyway.

^^ RAAAAAGE
PM2 was still my favorite. I'd like another PMRPG game, not a Paper Mario platformer.

When I played it it felt just like a Mario game, just with turn-based rpg battles put in. What has Mario done in every game before? Jump. Mario jumps in an overworld filled with platforming and you have a Mario game. I just cant believe how stupid Nintendo can act sometimes...
And a question: Is Geno and others that debuted in SMRPG belong to Square, Nintendo, or both?
Also the chances really suck for SMRPG having a sequel any time soon... Considering Square didn't even let them use the foest maze song in Brawl. But to make a sequel would definatly be a massive success, and it would be a smart financial plan, so it doesn't seem completely unlikely that there will never be a sequel.

I'm pretty sure that all characters created specifically for
Super Mario RPG are the property of Square. Geno makes a cameo appearance in
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, y'see, and, during the end credits, when the copyright information comes up, it credits Square with the rights to the Geno character.
If they let Geno make a cameo appearance in
Superstar Saga, however, it seems like they wouldn't have minded giving Nintendo the Forest Maze theme for
SSB Brawl. Strange.

yeah yeah, i know. but seriously, smrpg is just jrpg starring mario, while PM/M&L are jrpg + Mario, if you get my meaning. I don't think mario lends itself well to generic rpg, attack magic item run stuff, the other series adds more flare and action and fun to stuff.
plus square doesn't actually make good jrpgs anymore
