I read this yesterday and it verified what most people in the competitive Smash scene already knew: Nintendo wants to make money off the Smash scene without actually putting any money into it.

Their extent of the involvement being "yeah you can have our name on stream and MAYBE we'll tweet about you on one of our Twitter accounts. But also we're running our own ads during the event and we're not helping you with any of the setup or prize money or anything". You compare that to how any other company interacts with their competitive communities, hell even Nintendo themselves with Splatoon, and it's totally egregious. Too bad Nintendo is probably not even going to respond to the controversy and they're just gonna walk away from all this with no consequences yet again.

Anyway play Project M.

It's too late to boycott Ultimate itself; the game's been out for 2 years, & a lot of folks have already paid in advance for the next year's worth of DLC.
So the question becomes how to make the company care by some means other than a threat to their income.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
