K, that's now the second penalty set Asnabel's gone into.
Dammit, I want to *fight* something. D:
So that it's easier for the judges at the end (I know Missy and Darkness are busy as):
First penalty set (after my intro, before Asna's first post): 85.5 hours, approx. So that's 2 penalties.
Second penalty set (after my latest post): 84 hours. So another two penalties, and counting...
C'mon man, I know you're busy, but still, give me something to work with.

Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users?

Pish-tosh.
You think that's bad, you should go read about the last time he and I fought. We really rip each other up pretty bad, ya know? Kind of like me and Andy. Not like Wy and Andy, though. Those two always get all metaphysical on each other's butts.Firestorm wrote:Dude... wow.

You act like the judges can't keep up with this stuff, man. Believe me, people can tell without you throwing up a red flag.Kargath wrote:K, that's now the second penalty set Asnabel's gone into.

And yeah, me and Andy (that'd be Erdawn) always do things...worse. Our personal best is collapsing the universe and sending neighboring universes spinning off into a sea of chaos.
We went into that meaning to go as over-the-top as necessary, and I blame him for being the one to blow up the planet, but that was fun to write.

Ne, ne....
I wasn't talking about the physical damage to reality. I mean that you two always do all that stuff with the insanity and the spiritual-metaphysical clashes damaging each others' characters' archetypes and the insanity-driving and whatnot. Everyone else is satisfied ripping each other to shreds, and you two generally rip each other to shreds and drive each other out of your respective gourds.

If I recall correctly, my last fight with Repster literally concluded with what Wyborn described: Ripping the universe a new one.
Except... back when we were doing that nonsense, it was kinda run-of-the-mill. Now, it comes across as a little extreme. The Gunjin seems have become slightly more realistic in my absence.
That's a good thing, I guess. Being able to just blow up the universe *does* kind of hinder the fights from coming to a conclusive ending.
That is to say, the fight is most definitely ended, but which corpse is the winner?

Psh, me and DARTH BOWSER would casually destroy planets in our battles with one another. Especially with all those nukes that got hurled around.

Memoirs
It has been quite some time. Roughly four and a half years, I think. When I moved away to Florida, I ended up way out in the boonies without so much as a phone line. Obviously, having no computer or phone on my farm made web-surfing *slightly* difficult. I never wanted to leave the Gunjin, but real life complications dragged me away, kicking and screaming. A conversation with a fantasy fan about two weeks ago kindled the fires of my memory and brought back visions of carnage and mass destruction, which I've sorely missed.
It's a shame to see most of the people I considered friends are gone now. Still, there's enough new people to keep this place alive, though the glory days are clearly over.
This place changed me somewhat. I was not very creative or talented when I first started, (were any of us?) but the desire to re-create what I saw others doing pushed me to do better. I wrote a story for my English comp class, and when my instructor read it, she asked me, "Have you done this before?"
I just smiled.
Pardon my ramblings, but I'm not done yet.
Some people just came here for a battle or two, then left. They didn't ever get that attached. So many like this came through that I doubt I have to mention any names.
Some people came online and stuck around a little longer, sort of making a name for themselves and making a friends along the way. But eventually, they move on. Selphie Meekstone and Ritchie the Talekeeper come to mind.
Some people registered here and practically made this place their home. They spent much time here, creating their own fantasy world and living out the impossible through their own creativity. Some of these people have moved on (Jedi Knight, primarily, jumps out in my mind), and some still show up every now and then. Like me, for instance.
But then, there were the true Gunjin-sukas. Folks like Ironwarrior, Volvagia, Zora, Link the Survivor, and others. I don't quite understand how they got so connected with their online counterparts, let alone come up with the material they did. I don't know anything about their real lives, but I do know this: they made this place come to life. The story topics, the Kakariko Inn thread, and other such bonding places forged friendships that won't easily be broken.
I was digging through the older threads and saw a topic from last year where Zora poked her head in here after so long. Reading that thread (it's on page eleven, go read it) just re-affirmed in my mind what an impact a virtual realm can have on real people.
I'm a sentimental guy; I get attached to TV characters, I see books come to life in my mind, I swim in this online literary sea. This place definitely changed me, because I was just a quiet little 12 year old (or however old I was when I registered, it's been forever) when I first got here. I didn't have any friend-making skills in real life and I used the internet to escape.
But learning to get along with people online spilled over into real life, and now I easily make friends with just about everybody I meet.
Folks like Joker and Volvagia have gotten married (not to each other, thank goodness. Imagine how those kids would turn out!) since thier debuts here, and their lives are obviously different now. But the impact that years of writing here have had can't really be undone.
I'm a private kind of guy; I don't think I've ever used my real name here. Some guys, like Wyborn and Erdawn, toss their real names around; I still don't do that. Not because I'm shy, just due to principle. I try to keep online and offline totally separate, hence the alternate names. But, maybe that's why I never got as much out of the Gunjin as those other Gunjin heroes. Granted, I was referred to as a 'Gunjin Legend' before I left, though I never thought so highly of myself. Still, I paled in comparison to those guys.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, you get out of this place what you put into it. Those who really lose themselves in their writing and actually get emotionally attached to their characters can literally find some temporary happiness here, though I can't see anyone staying here all their life. I don't think we'll ever see another Nintendoland Battlefield like the one from five years ago, with the close comraderie that we had.
But I do know this. Someday down the road, I might end working with another fantasy fan, and I'll probably bring up this website.
And if that person says, "Yeah... VGF. I remember that place. My screen name was Ironwarrior/Jedi Knight/Volvagia/Joker/Wyborn/Darth Bowser/NintendoGod/whoever. I had fun with that."
If I hear that... to me, it'll be like meeting an old friend, even if we're only meeting for the first time.
I've known some of my buddies here far longer than *any* of my current real life friends. Kind of depressing, but...
...also kind of enlightening.

Thanks for listening to a hopelessly sentimental guy rant about how a fake world has changed his real one.
I know, this is a 11th tourney thread, but I hope Rep will look the other way.
In conclusion:
My name's Jesse.

Heh, well said, Brett.
Yeah, unfortunately while I was there during that time, I was not very active at all. I came back to the present and it was sort of a cold shock.
Everybody seems to control the other person's character in their posts now. Has this become standard or something? I do not remember it in the posts of yore. Nor does the Battlefield Tourny rules appear to allow it. (Isn't it godmodding?)
Still, I hope we can make this Gunjin in a way alike the old; at least, in the good ways. Alas, my words are much clumsier than Brett's on this matter.

Hey, t3hDarkness has repeatedly said he's pressed for time, and I know Missy's as busy as a faerie can be.
If I'd been late I'd have done calculations for myself too.
^^^Nobody's given a clear definition of what godmoding is in this tourney. Ah well.

Role-playing

The minor control over each others characters has been in play for as long as I've been here, and that's a long time. About one month less than Rep/Wyborn, and three months less than Metal Man.
If we did away with the control of each others characters, we would severely limit our post sizes. It would also make telling the story much more difficult, because you would have to wait for a response *every single time your opponent needs to do anything.*
That style doesn't suit me quite as well, although it is very entertaining if done correctly. A number of talented writers make use of that style on KAF. Still, I prefer our style. It seems more natural to me.

Firestorm/[strike]Brett/[/strike]Jesse, that was very well-said.

Godmoding is a relative term. Some places it's something quite perfectly normal in others.
Another thing about the "No touchy my dude" style has the effect of many pretty much just dogging and rendering everything ineffective. Mostly newbs mind you, but there they are.
