Remember Street Fighter II? And remember the dozens of spinoffs of it in the arcade? This is a spinoff of Capcom's successfull Street Fighter series. This is basically a "kiddy" version of it-And it is humerous and filled with cameos from their other popular games.
The graphics are very pretty-looking sprites. They are fluid and humourous(sp), and look very animeish. And some Darkstalkers fans may recognize Morrigan, Felicia, and Hsien-Ko(sp) as playable characters. The backgrounds are also pretty good-looking-That is where most cameos are. Perhaps you can find our good friends Sasquatch, Baby Bonnie Hood, and Talbain in the backgrounds? And I like how some Mighty-Combos look. Sure, some of them may just be a super-hadoken, but others can turn out to be something different. One of Zangeif's Mighty Combos has him dancing while kicking at the same time and one of Felicia's mighty combos has her summon a bunch of Can-Can dancers. There are also costume changes with flash-combos. Such as how Morrigan becomes a Nurse and stabs with a hypodermic Needle or how Felicia dons a Megaman Costume.
Combat's rather simplistic-It's basically just button-mashing and using a certain combination of buttons to execute combos and mighty combos. It also has a Taunt Button-Which isn't really good, but Sakura's Taunt (And one of Chun-Li's I've noticed, but she doesn't always have it-It seems to be dependent on what colour her clothes are) can actually deal damage-Finishing off someone with Sakura's taunt is classic. And in order to do the mighty Combos, you have to smach the enemy and collect enough gems. (Most of which fly out of them as you hit them or come out of treasure chests) You can also find items such as a Banana peel or a rock that turns them to stone for a few minutes.
The music really isn't much to get excited about-The soundtrack's rather repetetive at times, and the sound mainly consists of beatings and voices, but the voices are funny. The voices are all in Japanese (Or are just gibberish or battle cries) but they rather fit the overall mood of the game.
The game's also pretty funny. There's a mode in which Tessa asks you questions to determine which character you'd most likely be-And occasionally, she may ask you "What do you think of cute little witches who ask you lots and lots of questions?". (Source: Greyhead) And some story modes end with a funny joke or something just plain "wtf?!" happening-Like how if you go through with Ibuki, she goes to the city for ICE CREAM, then finds Sakura.
Ibuki: Excuse me, but do you know where the nearest Ice Cream shop is?
Sakura: Hey! You must be a ninja! cool!
Ibuki: Oh no! You saw through my disguise! Now I must silence you to conceal my identity!
And what's also funny is that Ibuki DRESSES like a Ninja.
Overall, Pocket Fighter's not what you're looking for if you're for more hardcore fighting from Capcom, but if you're looking for a laugh, or if you're introducing your little sibling to Fighting games, then Pocket Fighter's what you're looking for. Of course, the humour and entertainment of Pocket Fighter won't last forever. 7.5/10
